Much of the infrastructure needed to host an event of this scale already existed in Vancouver, but several new projects were envisioned to make the games a success. Among them is the new convention and exhibition centre, which will be the headquarters and broadcasting facility for national and international media. The Canada Line from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to downtown is close to completion, making it easier than ever before for visitors to get to the heart of the city. Vancouver is one of the greenest cities in North America, leading the world in its use of renewable, sustainable materials and practices. Major civic initiatives have helped to make Vancouver a beautiful place to live and visit, including the refusal to build a proposed inner-city highway, the redevelopment of blighted industrial zones, the push towards sustainable practices with regard to locally grown produce and area water supplies, and, of course, the inspiration that comes from living in one of the world’s most spectacular settings.
