Wyoming Official Travelers Journal 2008 - (Page 45) Here lies the heart and soul of the pioneer story, where thousands of emigrants traveled ever westward. The Central region cuts a wide, long swath through the state, from sagebrush plains on Wyoming’s eastern border to the Wind River Mountain foothills. In this vast countryside, the trails whisper of early America’s history. Casper, the state’s second most populous city, is not only a geographical midpoint but also a cultural destination, especially for its must-see National Historic Trails Interpretive Center. Douglas, home of the Wyoming State Fair, boasts rich natural resources and sprawling ranches. The two farming communities of Torrington and Wheatland are ideal small-town gems to launch a memorable trek across Wyoming. Photography: (Inset) Pioneers cross the plains.
