NEW PRODUCTS & SERVICES Rogers Launches Laminate Material with Improved Thermal Reliability Rogers Corp. Advanced Circuit Materials Division has launched the next generation of RO4360G2 laminates with improved thermal reliability for higher UL Maximum Operating Temperatures (MOT’s). In 2010, Rogers launched its RO4360 laminate, a high Dk RF thermoset laminate. The RO4360G2 laminate is the next generation with improved thermal reliability that will help fabricators achieve higher UL MOT’s. With a tailored high Dk of 6.15 at 10 GHz, this material allows next generation power amplifier designers to meet size and cost reduction targets. Specifically, the laminate’s higher Dk allows for a significant reduction in finished circuit board size (20 to 30 percent). RO4360G2 laminates process similar to FR-4, are automated assembly compatible, and offer the same reliability and repeatability that customers have come to expect from Rogers RO4350B material. UL 94V-0 flame rating (pending) and fully lead-free process capable, RO4360G2 laminates possess improved thermal conductivity of .81 W/m/K for improved reliability, a low Z-axis CTE for reliable plated through holes, and drill performance as good as or better than RO4350B laminates. Typical applications for RO4360G2 laminates are power amplifiers, LNAs, RF components (combiners/splitters), patch antennas, and as a replacement material for designs previously employing LTCC (low temperature, co-fired ceramic). CEA-Leti Wins Prize in New Materials Category for E-Thread Technology CEA-Leti has announced that researchers Dominique Vicard and Jean Brun received the Avantex Innovation Prize for the use of the E-Thread technology in textiles. E-Thread is a microelectronic packaging technology developed by Leti that allows for a direct connection of a chip to a set of two conductors, which can provide the functions of antenna, power and/or data bus. This allows a 10 times improvement in size, assembly time and reliability compared to classic microelectronic packaging. The E-Thread assembly can then be incorporated inside a yarn and used by the textile and plastic industries using standard production tools. Electronics such as LEDs, RFIDs or sensors can then be truly integrated in materials and objects. In choosing this technology for the innovation award, the Avantex jury said “electronics integrated in textiles during the textile processing and not simply by adding the components in a last step will be a significant step forward.” The jury also said the prize was awarded to “this development, as it shows that research 22 Antenna Systems & Technology Summer 2013 MATERIALS & MANUFACTURING and development is also for the textile industry of vital importance and that it can lead to the creation of new companies.” E-Thread is one of the technologies used within the European FP7 PASTA project (Platform for Advanced Smart Textile Application), and is the key technology asset of the Primo1D startup company, that will be created by Leti during the second half of 2013. RFMW 24 GHz RF Absorber from MAST Technologies RFMW Ltd. has announced design and sales support for a new line of microwave absorbing materials from MAST Technologies. These “tuned frequency” absorbers are electrically optimized for specific applications and intended for customers who experience high frequency cavity resonance effects or high frequency EMI emissions above 18 GHz. Proper application of the absorber eliminates these unwanted signals. This durable elastomeric material is flexible and will not crack, even in outdoor environments. Halogen free and RoHS compliant, the material is electrically non-conductive and can be placed in direct contact with electronic circuits. MAST model number MR11-0041-00 is tuned for absorption at 24 GHz. The reflectivity vs. frequency graph shows the quality performance of this material. Additional standard absorption frequencies are available and MAST has the ability to customize the material to specific, application dictated frequencies. MAST absorber material is available with or without a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing. Standard sheet size is 24 by 24 inches and 12 by 12 inch sheets are available.
