Company Profiles Advanced Grinding & Dispersing Technologies for LiB Applications Yongjin Kwon * NETZSCH Korea NETZSCH Group is a worldwide active family-owned enterprise with its headquarters located in Selb/Bavaria, Germany. We are a global company with over 140 years of history and three different businesses units in more than 35 countries. Based on our rich experience and long term accumulated technologies, we are the leading company of Grinding and Dispersing (Wet & Dry), and two other units in thermal analysis and mono pump in the global market. The business unit "Grinding & Dispersing" of NETZSCH is one of the world's market leaders in wet and dry processing technology. NETZSCH has expanded its market share in diverse industries including lithium ion batteries (LiBs) over the years. In particular, the LiB industry is subdivided into four main components; cathode, anode, separator and electrolyte (and electrode slurries as well). Both Wet & Dry grinding process, or sometimes only Dry grinding process, can be applied to produce cathode or anode active material. In NETZSCH CGS 32 terms of cathode material for dry grinding machines, the NETZSCH fluidized bed jet mill, the CGS, can produce LCO. On the other hand, the CSM, a NETZSCH classifying mill, can manufacture a ternary compounds cathode material such as NCM and NCA for de-agglomeration process after heat treatment process. With our integrated dynamic air classifier and optimized internal design, desired fineness can be achieved or simply formation of very fine particles can be avoided thru ternary compounds cathode materials. On the other hand, solid state process has been widely used to earn LMO and LFP, which is having a spinel and olivine crystal structure respectively. Wet grinding process has been generally used to reduce the particle size down to sub-micron range for LMO and LFP like materials. This very narrow particle size distribution of the product is easily achieved by NETZSCH system ZETA mill. After heat treatment and spraying process, the NETZSCH CGS or CSM can be considered too dependent on the characteristics of the products, of course. NETZSCH Alpha September 27-28, 2016 DONALD E.
