Industry News Laird Technologies Acquires Klüver Aggregatebau Laird Technologies, Inc. has acquired Klüver Aggregatebau GmbH. Klüver’s revenues for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2010 were $17.9 million. The purchase expands the scope of Laird Technologies’ thermal management business into compressorbased temperature control systems for usage in medical, telecommunications and other end-use markets. With the acquisition of Klüver, Laird Technologies becomes one of the only companies offering a complete choice of solutions to these complex and critical temperature control applications. “This addition enhances our approach to strategic markets, especially medical where we have focused in the last few years with our hermoelectric modules and assemblies capabilities,” said Tom Cochran, president, Laird Technologies Performance Materials. Klüver was founded in 1973 to design and make compressorbased cooling systems for digital x-ray systems for medical applications, and this is the core business today. Klüver is based in Kaltenkirchen in Schleswig-Holstein in the north of Germany. telecom and the data center industry led him to develop intelligent, rack and row-based heat containment systems. From there, the product line has grown into a suite of solutions all centering on data center optimization and energy efficiency. “Opengate solutions adapt to server and other IT equipment demands,” said Germagian, president and founder, Opengate. “With deployment of intelligent containment and precise cooling control systems, customers are able to optimize performance and significantly reduce data center energy consumption. Safely raising the cooling supply air temperature to the upper ASHRAE limit is how we enable these efficiencies.” HP Opens New Research Facility to Advance Sustainable Data Center Technologies NEMA Publishes ANSI C119.1-2011 American National Standard for Electric Connectors The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published ANSI C119.1-2011 American National Standard for Electric Connectors - Sealed Insulated Underground Connector Systems Rated 600 Volts. This standard, last revised in 2006, was produced by the ANSI C119.1 Subcommittee on Sealed Underground Connector Systems and approved by the Accredited Standards Committee on Connectors for Electrical Utility Applications, C119. ANSI C119.1 covers sealed insulated underground connector systems rated at 600 volts for utility applications and establishes electrical, mechanical and sealing requirements. Also included are sealed multiport set screw connectors used by utilities in underground distribution systems. By using ANSI C119.1, users will have reasonable assurance that sealed insulated underground connectors meeting the standard’s requirements will perform in a satisfactory manner, provided they have been properly selected for the intended application and are installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. This revision features additional tests for impact, reusability and resealability, with the aim of better representing the conditions encountered by connectors in utility service. New spreadsheet attachments in the standard can be used to collect current cycle test data, calculate connector stability, generate graphs of the data, and print the data to provide test results as part of the test report. HP has opened a state-of-the-art research facility in Fort Collins, Colo., in which the company will advance sustainable data center technologies. The facility will expand on HP’s Converged Infrastructure architecture by developing technologies to eliminate IT sprawl, increase energy efficiency and reduce power consumption to help clients minimize their carbon footprint and reinvest cost savings into business innovation. Built in collaboration with HP Labs, the 50,000 square-foot site will enable HP to explore new strategies for reducing the environmental impact of next-generation data centers. At completion, the site will use technologies to help customers minimize power for the cooling of their data centers, while increasing their capacity with less equipment. Pelican Products Purchases Custom Packaging Solutions Provider Pelican Products Pty. Ltd., has concluded a transaction to purchase Australian-based custom packaging solutions provider Trimcast. The move brings two brands under the same corporate umbrella and enhances the Pelican’s custom packaging solution offerings in the Australasia region. “As we continue to grow our global business both organically and through strategic acquisitions such as this, it’s important that we bring companies into our family of businesses that meet both our business goals and have a similar culture and outlook. Trimcast meets both those criteria,” said Lyndon Faulkner, president and CEO, Pelican Products. MB Pulizzi Announces Company Launch Geist and Opengate Data Systems Announce Airflow Management Solution Partnership Geist has made a financial investment in Opengate Data Systems. Geist will begin offering and promoting Opengate’s line of data center airflow management solutions to its customer base. Geist and Opengate Data Systems began working together in September 2007, when Opengate contracted Geist to develop and integrate web-based communication functions into a variety of Opengate solutions. “We’ve seen this company grow” said Sam Featherston, CEO of Geist’s parent company, Plastic Companies Enterprises. “And thus feel their intelligent containment products are the best in the industry. As a result, we jumped at the chance to further our relationship with Opengate.” Opengate Data Systems was founded in May 2007 by Mark Germagian, formerly with APC and Wright Line. Mark’s background in 26 MB Pulizzi, LLC has announced the launch of its new company. The company provides new product development engineering services to the data center, military, aerospace, government and other industries where only a custom design will fulfill requirements. Also provided are small run manufacturing services for complete assemblies, PCB’s, cable assemblies and any other assemblies clients require but the larger manufacturing firms do not like to quote. MB Pulizzi will help clients design, document and prototype new products for AC or DC power and distribution, power management, remote control, uninterruptible power supplies, power conditioning, power conversion, power factor correction and more. As part of the design process, engineering, wiring, schematics, PCB layouts, software, bill of materials, approved vendor list and worldwide agency certifications are provided along with everything the client requires to go to production with a new product.
