APPLICATION • COMPONENT DEVELOPMENTS BEI Kimco Magnetics' BLDC Motor Solves Challenging Application operation, survive the extreme temperatures and for improved corrosion resistance. A proprietary hall sensor support structure and advanced cable strain relief system were developed to achieve unprecedented reliability under the extreme conditions. The housing design allows the motor to be filled with oil to compensate for the high pressures. "Over the past few years BEI has developed a reputation for highly reliable motor solutions," said Walter Smith, BEI Kimco's Senior Applications Engineer/Project Manager for Motors. "We are constantly designing products to meet the unique needs of each individual application. Our customers have come to rely on this expertise in a wide range of industries." BEI Kimco Magnetics, a company of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST), Inc., recently met the challenging Brushless DC Motor requirements utilized in a Down Hole Oil Exploration application. Key to the product's design specification was a motor that would deliver 7.0 Nm (62 in-lbs) of peak torque and 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) at speeds of 2,000 rpm on a continuous basis. The motor would also be required to survive ambient temperatures approaching 200° and pressures of 30,000 PSI. A final requirement was the need for Hall effect sensors for commutation. To meet these demanding requirements for a highly reliable and robust design, BEI Kimco designed their Model DII36-125000A. The resulting motor measures 3.6 inches in outer diameter and 12.5 inches in overall length. High energy samarium cobalt magnets were incorporated to ensure high efficiency Quantum Design 6325 Lusk Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92121 Contact: Melissa Figueroa Phone: 858-481-4400 Fax: 858-481-7410 Email: sales@qdusa.com Web site: www.qdusa.com Quantum Design is the leading manufacturer of automated material characterization systems for the physics, chemistry, and material science research communities. These systems provide temperatures from 0.05 to 1000 K and magnet fields up to 16 tesla. The Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS®) provides a wide range of measurements, including: magnetometry, electrical transport, heat capacity and thermal transport. The SQUID-based Magnetic Property Measurement System (MPMS®) is the industry standard for ultra-sensitive magnetic measurements. VersaLab is our portable, cryogen-free cryocooler-based Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). With sensitivity better than 10-6 emu/rt-Hz, this 3-tesla VSM has a temperature range of 50 to 1000 K. ABB, a power and automation technology company, has released the 38 kV R-MAG outdoor vacuum circuit breaker. The R-MAG breaker utilizes a magnetic actuator design that has only one moving part, offering an improvement over the traditional spring charging mechanism. First introduced in 2002 for 15 kV and 27 kV applications and rated for 10,000 operations, the 38 kV R-MAG breaker provides more than five times the IEEE requirement for endurance capabilities. Additionally, the magnetic actuator requires no regular maintenance during the life of the breaker, thus reducing costly maintenance intervals, while increasing reliability and safety. The 38 kV R-MAG is rated up to 2,000 A 200 kV BIL 31.5 kA. The R-MAG takes advantage of embedded pole technology, providing a compact and modular design, suitable for a wide range of climatic and environmental conditions. Embedded in a solid insulating material of high dielectric strength, the vacuum interrupters are insulated from external effects of mechanical shock, dust and humidity. The R-MAG breaker is field proven, with thousands of units in service globally. ABB magnetic actuator technology delivers state-of-the-art distribution class breakers, while providing reduced maintenance costs and increased reliability for our customers.
