Axial Flux Machines
In contrast to a traditional (radial flux) machine, in an Axial Flux
Machine (AFM) flux linkage between stator and rotor is aligned
with the axis of rotation. This means that the electromechanical
interaction between stator and rotor can take place at a greater
distance from the axis of rotation and produce more torque for
the same outer diameter. Most promising applications of the Axial
Flux Machines (AFM) seem to be direct drive wind turbines and fast
dynamics motoring [5].
Axial flux rotor is also known as pancake rotor, due to the large
area between rotor and stator. It is crucial to maintain desired
mechanical air gap between the stator and rotor at all operating
conditions. Predicting forces that act on the structure is extremely
important for design of the bearing mechanism and can be very
challenging. By few clicks in EMS, armature current and rotational
position of a complex 3D structure can be seamlessly parametrized
to achieve accurate, three-dimensional force calculation for a variety of loading cases and rotor positions.
Winding losses cause temperature rise between the rotors. To facilitate design of an adequate cooling system for the winding, EMS
thermal solver computes total temperature distribution in the machine, by taking in account core and stranded losses.
Conclusion
Recent developments in the technology of soft magnetic composite materials have enabled competitive manufacturing of novel
3D flux electrical machines. One of the main challenges in design of

these machines is lack of an effective 3D simulation package. EMS
by EMWorks is an electromechanical simulation tool, fully integrated in Solidworks. It allows an easy redesign of a complex machine
geometry and an instant evaluation of its performance.
