Businesses Saying Yes to Yes!Winnipeg
he heavy hitters were in the room – the premier, the mayor, the CEO of Wellington West and the heads of business – as a giant clock ticked down the minutes and seconds to the big announcement. At exactly 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 18, the cone of silence was lifted and the leaders of Winnipeg’s top 200 businesses heard about Yes!Winnipeg, a five-year, $6-million private/public sector investment campaign, aimed at attracting new businesses to Winnipeg and assisting existing businesses to expand. Each and every one in the room was being personally asked to ensure the success of the new economic development initiative by financially supporting the campaign, which came about as a result of The Chamber’s Selling Winnipeg to the World initiative. Prior to the announcement, The Chamber and Economic Development Winnipeg (formerly Destination Winnipeg) had signed a Memorandum of Understanding that would see Selling Winnipeg to the World rebranded as Yes!Winnipeg, under Economic Development Winnipeg. “The Yes!Winnipeg initiative aligns with our organization’s goal to lead and facilitate opportunities for growth within nine industry sectors,” EDW President and CEO Marina James said.
Chamber President and CEO Dave Angus said the partnership represents a pro-active focus on business attraction that hasn’t been seen before in Winnipeg. And lending his support, because he personally believes in Winnipeg, is Charlie Spiring, CEO of Wellington West, who heads up the investment campaign. “We are well on our way to achieving our goal of raising $4 million from the private sector because a number of companies strongly believe it’s important and have already stepped up to the plate,” Spiring said. “Over the next month or so, we will be fully engaging other local companies to seek their support and help in putting us over the top.”
