illinoiS (continued from previous page) The Keeling Puri Peace Plaza Rockford Illinois Friday, September 19, 2008 The Keeling Puri Peace Plaza in Rockford Illinois will hold its 6th annual International Day of Peace on Friday, September 19th at the Peace Plaza. This year’s celebration expects more than 1000 school children and 500 adults to be in attendance. We celebrate the diversity of our community and our mutual aspiration for world peace with song, dance and hands-on projects. www.keeling-puri-peaceplaza.com BRIDGEWATER PEACE VIGIL First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church Bridgewater, MA September 20 and 21, 2008 Beginning on the afternoon of 20th there will be concerts, dancing, creation of a sand mandala, children’s activities, and a parade on the Bridgewater Town Common. Our large Peace Dove will lead the parade and pinwheels for peace will decorate the route. The children will be making cranes to participate in a 1,000 cranes project. Art classes at local schools will join in this activity, as they did in 2007 in making pinwheels. A large crane will also lead the parade. During the night the church building will be open for meditation followed by services from many faith traditions including a Native American Sunrise Ceremony. Other churches in town and in the area are being encouraged to hold a special Peace Service on Sunday morning. Everyone will be invited to participate in a Pot Luck Dinner at First Parish after the morning services. A concluding ceremony on the front lawn of the church will include singing and dispersing of sand from the mandala. multicultural celebration for peace and nonviolence. Refreshments will be served. Our goal is to ignite young people around the world to actively create peace in their daily lives by connecting them with peers around the world. www.peacepal.org ART GALA Beacon, NY The Art Gala is scheduled in honor of the International Day of Peace (9/21). Beginning a week earlier (9/13), all eligible artwork will be brought to the streets of Beacon, NY. Merchants along Main Street will display the artwork in their stores, organized by countries. The local business association is converting a map of Main Street to show where each company is located to create the essence that you can “travel the world through Main Street”. Each store showcasing art will also have that country’s flag (paper copy) and “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in English and the native language of the Country. Community members will be able to cast their votes for a “community choice” award in each category.
