Peace Day - September 21, 2008 - 75
By Howard Flaer I freelance and have always been involved as a volunteer for various causes when in-between jobs. I found inspiration and a call to action with an ALBERT EINSTEIN quote I stumbled upon. “The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.” I formed thinkPEACE.net with the following goals in mind: 1 ) To promote the UN’s annual September 21st International Day of Peace with the vision that Peace Day will inspire a new generation of peace thinkers, teachers and leaders in the same way that Earth Day encouraged environmentalism. 2 ) Starting with Peace Day, promoting the idea that teaching young people to honor peace heroes who have contributed to the non-violent resolution of conflict is more empowering than lessons about wars, generals and conquerors. 3) To promote the ideal that World Peace Is Possible! It may take a while, but peace is where mankind needs to advance to. The challenge for me was to find a unique way to create public awareness of the existence of Peace Day on a small budget with a few volunteers. I had several grandiose ideas that I could not make happen, but in late 2003 I came to realize that using existing businesses (clubs in my case) might be the answer. I created “Stand-Up For International Peace Peace Day Comedy” and began to send out letters, emails and make as many phone calls as humanly possible. Nothing happened for quite a while, but www.worldpeaceemerging.com 75
