His hobby has become his work and now he has, as he likes to say, “a socially acceptable excuse to fly all the time.” And then there is Bob Perry who sold his successful animal hospital and retired in 1999. He was playing a lot of tennis when he got the call to help stamp out a foot-and-mouth epidemic in the United Kingdom. So, he jetted off to Britain to work seven days a week with veterinarians from around the world to keep the deadly disease from destroying their cattle industry. Bob returned home to Omaha only to be called on again, this time to fight a poultry disease in California. What Bob Buford, Mike Mulligan and Bob Perry have discovered is that having happy successful lives as we get older depends on remaining engaged with the world around us, taking part in healthy, spirit-enhancing activities and finding a purpose that satisfies our inner drive. ey also know that one of life’s greatest satisfactions comes from giving back to society. ese are all opportunities that the Peace Corps can offer boomers seeking significance. As people begin the search from success to significance they are looking for the right opportunity to pursue their passion and leave a lasting legacy. Peter Drucker said that, “ e only worthy goal is to make a meaningful life out of an ordinary one … make life your endgame.” Our experience at AARP tells us that’s what many boomers and 50-plus volunteers want to do. And for many of them the right opportunity just might be as a Peace Corps volunteer.
