But the programs mesh since millions of the mentors being sought will be older Americans. Supported by e Atlantic Philanthropies, e Experience Wave is an energetic campaign to promote state and federal policies that will help tap the talent, knowledge and time of the boomer generation and help them engage in work of their choice, civic life and service. Will we see the wave of older Americans–those whose generation rose out of the post-World War II surge of new births and our increasing longevity–as a danger or as an opportunity? So far, most of the talk has been about the threat to Social Security and burden on the younger generation. We hope, instead, to show policy-makers–and our fellow citizens– that the aging of America is a great chance to tap the experience of older Americans on a scale never seen before. Once again in our political history this is a time when states can take the lead and become laboratories for democracy. is spring, the lawmakers and governors of New York and Maryland have pointed the way to initiate appropriate state planning processes. In New York, the legislature authorized a Mature Worker Task Force and in Maryland the legislature passed and the governor signed, with enthusiastic comment, the Baby Boomer Initiative Act. If we are lucky, other states and the Congress will follow suit, and the President will use his bully pulpit to turn the inevitable growing wave of aging boomers into a Wave of Experience that will help us solve some of our society’s most critical social problems.
