I provinces and countryside where on Carnival weekend a friend of mine and I mountain-biked from the town of Jeremie to Les Cayes for four days. The origins of Haitian kindness and hospitality are easy to find in the towns along this mountainous and coastal route and a reward for enduring the intensity of Port-au-Prince. The first time I noticed the TSA warning in the Miami airport, I was reading Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point. I began comparing models from the book to what was happening in Haiti. How did Haiti, a place where violence against foreigners and kidnappings had been virtually unknown, seem to change overnight? And when will it stop? At first, supporters of the recently ousted president, Jean Bertrand Aristide, argued that it was retaliation to the kidnapping of their elected president. That revolutionary notion quickly dissipated with the rise in the criminal activity and as others doubted that Aristide had even been kidnapped. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding Aristide’s future, kidnappings continued. And each time I heard a kidnapping story, my concern increased. I had no intention of leaving Haiti, but an “It Won’t Happen To Me” syndrome settled in. Gradually, my anxiety increased, and I grew more cautious as I approached my own parked car, walked through my neighborhood and along busy streets or drive through tight-quiet alleys. My eyes began to shift from side to side. I became increasingly shifty, looked back and forth. I was, at times, paranoid. would start my car and start profiling. I talked to myself. “Look for the poor young kid with baggy hip-hop clothes and a bulge near his waist,” Then I realized that a bulging near the waist and baggy hiphop clothes don’t go together.
