Worldview Magazine - Fall 2007 - (Page 38) — Saving the planet — CONFLICT & SECURITY W hen mankind realizes how serious is the ecological imbalance of their planetary home, they must take the steps so urgently needed to remedy the situation. If men* were to fail to respond with sufficient resolution they would be guilty of surrendering the planet to slow but inevitable destruction. What, then, the legacy to hand on to their children? That this self-destruction should not prevail all must act together, and make the necessary sacrifices. This will entail a complete change in attitude to the integrity of the planet and what are seen as the needs of men today. with the alternatives: the beneficial results of action now, on the one hand, and the destruction which would ensue from doing nothing, or too little, on the other. Thus, the decision is man’s alone. When men understand this they will indeed rally to the cause. They will see that the future for their children depends on action now, and will elicit from Maitreya and his group the necessary steps to take. Maitreya will advocate a simpler form of living, one more in keeping with the reality of the planet’s situation. When enough people are convinced that this is necessary there will be a It will not be easy for growing movement to some to countenance the changes needed but only “Only through sharing simplify throughout the by such change can the can the bounty of Planet planet. The reality of global warming is now dawning on the minds of millions, yet, despite the overwhelming evidence some still deny the actions of men are the cause. We, your Elder Brothers, can say with full conviction that the actions of men are responsible for eighty per cent of global warming. Maitreya, you will find, will not be long in bringing this urgent problem to man’s attention. He will face men Faced with the dilemma of necessary change men will come to realize the inevitability of accepting the principle of sharing. Only sharing will make these changes practical and possible. Only through sharing can the bounty of Planet Earth be successfully used. Only through sharing can this bounty be correctly husbanded. Only thus can the Planet itself live in harmony with its environment and with its inhabitants. Following 20 years of repression and human rights abuses by the Indonesian government, East Timor voted for and achieved independence five years ago. Other continuing sources of tension include an armed separatist conflict in semi-autonomous Aceh in 2005. Sharia police can arrest anyone for improper dress or being seen with a member of the opposite sex other than a spouse. Critics accuse the police of violating the Indonesian constitution. Indonesia’s biggest security threat comes from Jemaah Islamiah which took credit for 2002 bombing in Kuta, Bali. Indonesia is a source, transit and destination country for women, children and men trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation and forced labor. ECONOMY In 30 years, the per-capita income grew from $70 to more than $1,000. Non-tariff barriers, rent-seeking by state-owned enterprises and domestic subsidies exacerbated the 1997 Asian financial crisis. International Monetary Fund economic reforms failed and led to President Suharto’s resignation in 1998. Per-capita income has returned to pre-crisis levels and growth remains around 5 percent but the nation suffers from an unstable rupiah, high inflation and widespread corruption. HEALTH & EDUCATION This article, published in Share International magazine, was written by a Master of Wisdom. The Masters, headed by Maitreya, the World Teacher, are highly advanced teachers and advisors of humanity who are planning to work openly in the world very soon. There are fewer than 9,000 high schools and 20 state universities. Instruction is in Bahasa Indonesian, and many youth study and speak English. With high migration rates and large population movements, the health challenge will be avoiding a large-scale, generalized AIDS epidemic in the future. Out of a thousand newborns, 35 will die of acute respiratory infections, perinatal complications and diarrhea, the highest number for a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
