Help end the book famine in Africa! Books For Africa is the largest shipper of donated books to the African continent. We are actively seeking partner organizations on the ground in Africa to receive and distribute books. Books For Africa supplies a sea container of about 30,000 books packed to your specifications, while the receiving group (or its financial supporters) covers the shipping and port clearance costs. Individual contributions are always welcome as well. Since 1988, Books For Africa has collaborated with Peace Corp Volunteers in many African countries, including Chad, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and South Africa. He mentioned that three leading factors led him to that conclusion. First, energy security is the issue with the biggest difference between what is required to keep the U.S. secure, and what will be achieved through the current programs and proposals. Second, a transformed energy policy is likely to become a requirement for achieving the economic aspirations of the U.S. ird, energy exacerbates nearly every major foreign policy issue. Energy is the one underlying condition that exacerbates nearly every major U.S. foreign policy issue, he said. “We pressure Sudan to stop genocide in Darfur, but we find that the Sudanese government is insulated by oil revenue and oil supply relationships. We pressure Iran to stop its uranium enrichment activities, yet key nations are hesitant to endanger their access to Iran’s oil and natural gas.” While climate change and other environmental concerns are reason for a transformation in U.S. energy policy, “U.S. national security will be at risk as long as we are heavily dependent on imported energy.” Lugar argued that “green idealism” risks diverging from the energy reality that the U.S. and the world currently face. He suggested that U.S. policies must be in line with what is possible globally. “In this context, long-range, arbitrary targets for cutting global greenhouse gas emissions will be quickly overwhelmed without rapid breakthroughs in energy technology and much greater global coordination,” Lugar said. Our energy vulnerability will most likely continue into the future, he said, and he vowed to challenge the winner of the next presidential election to address it. He asked those in the audience to do the same. Together, we have the power and the resources to do so, but it energy security is largely a political problem that must be solved in Washington, and the resolution of it requires the leadership of the President. omas Strouse To find out more, please contact: Dr. Allison Frendak-Blume afrendak@gmu.edu or 703-993-4983 6 Spring 2008 http://www.booksforafrica.org http://www.booksforafrica.org
