Giving Back ThE PEACE CORPS COMMUNITY MAKING A DIFFERENCE by JoAnna Haugen READING MATERIALS IN LIBERIA Hundreds of boxes of books are being prepared for shipment to Liberia through the nonprofit organization, African Children’s Libraries. ann easterly (Liberia), a retired librarian, established the organization to help increase and inspire knowledge to those who do not have easy access to it. The books will be distributed to 20 schools, mostly in Monrovia and Gbamga, Liberia. The Portland School District donated a majority of the books currently collected and a number of other organizations have agreed to supply funding for shipment, but African Children’s Libraries is still in need of hardback books understandable by children from a rural area such as fairy tales or stories about animals as well as cash contributions. www. africanchildrenslibraries.org SChOOL LUNChES IN UGANDA Until recently, only 50 of the 550 students at a primary school in Bulera, Uganda, could afford to eat a meal during the school day. Noting the importance of nutrition in educational success Margaret Mimnaugh established the Omusana Foundation to raise money for student lunches, books and supplies. For seven dollars, a child can eat lunch for a year, and donations thus far have ensured that all the students at this school can eat for at least three semesters. E-mail omusanafoundation@gmail.com. MEDICAL AND SURGICAL CARE IN GUATEMALA Todd Peterson (Guatemala) and his father founded Partner for Surgery in 2001 from the roots of a Peace Corps project that has continued to grow stronger through collaboration with many Peace Corps volunteers World Viewpast5/27/09 4.75˝ x 4.825˝ over the ad ten years. Historically, due to numerous financial, cultural and geographic barriers, international medical teams volunteering their services in Guatemala cannot reach those populations most in need and end up serving middle and upper class families. Partner for Surgery is dedicated to bridging the gap between Guatemala’s most rural communities and sustainable access to medical and surgical care. The organization has three full-time staff members in Guatemala and has supplied medical care and education to more than 25,000 people as well as facilitated surgery for more than 5,000 Guatemalans. www. partnerforsurgery.org P serving our society’s most critical needs in education, the environment, organizational leadership, and psychology. ut your ideals to work ANTIOCH UNIVERSITY NEW ENGLAND offers graduate programs to empower people who believe that one person can make a difference.
