I told Kondwani that show time would be 8 a.m. on a certain day and he passed the word. at morning, I bicycled the ﬁve miles to the town and waited an hour, but no one showed. I shouldn’t have been surprised; in Malawi, people are typically a couple of hours late. So I started the videos and children from market quickly ﬁlled the room. At least they could learn something about beekeeping, I thought, and I left to ﬁnd Kondwani and the Jumbi contingency. I found them on the other side of the market. After walking an hour and a half to the beekeeping show, they had decided to check out the bargain prices at a public auction, items seized from people who had failed to repay fertilizer loans after last year’s harvest: old bicycles, broken bed frames, well-used tables and chairs, a couple of gaudy plastic battery-operated wall clocks, four goats, any number of chickens, bags of fertilizer, and a couple of wooden doors with no latches or knobs. Kondwani, too, had been delayed. As a member of his village dispute resolution committee, he stayed home to rule on a complaint that the village headman had trespassed on a neighbor’s land when he expanded his garden. e men from Jumbi Valley were happy with the auction and the Bolero street boys were delighted with the beekeeping lessons. I, however, wrestled with my disappointment and rescheduled the show. is time, I would meet the beekeepers at my house and we would walk together to Bolero. But when we arrived, the theatre door was locked; the proprietor had been called away to attend a funeral in a distant town. e men from Jumbi fanned out and found someone else with a DVD player and television.
