Worldview Magazine - Winter 2007 - (Page 33) roof that Kondwani had to turn the volume all the way up. While he held an umbrella to protect the video player and television monitor from the leaks, the beekeepers moved into pockets of dry floor to avoid other leaks. Still, the top-bar bee hive show was such a success that these men wanted to bring family and friends back to see it again. For the third run, I decided that, in the interest of capacity building, I would stay home and let Kondwani host the show. It was a huge success. Approximately 100 people attended his second beekeeping show in Bolero. Some of his new audience came from Bundi, which is a six-hour walk. Unfortunately, Bolero’s power failed that day so no one saw the videos. But Kondwani moderated a thorough and energetic discussion of beekeeping and the top-bar method. e discussion raised the farmers’ interests and we decided to return for the next showing a few weeks later at the Community Center. As the room filled, three members of the Community Center committee entered and quoted a new and exorbitant price for the room. I thought that my presence had caused the price hike, so I left and the committee cut the price in half. at price was still too high, so Kondwani and his colleagues looked for another venue. While they were gone, some village headmen came to the center expecting to see the videos. ey were so disappointed that the community room committee prudently decided to switch their position and admit everyone for free. e show was a success and now we’re build the hives and implementing the new techniques. I learned that I am in the midst of a group of people with incredible patience, perseverance and commitment. ey know how to wait how to work. ey live the adage, “don’t worry, be happy.” And I have learned to reconcile what I wish to do here with what is possible to do here. I have Kondwani to thank for that. Greg and Susan Dorr came to the Jumbi Valley 18 months ago. Susan returned home to care for her hospitalized father. Greg, a lawyer who served as the city attorney for Rockland, Maine, remained in Jumbi to complete the couple’s work.
