NICARAGUA Susan Neumann (80-82) received the Kentucky Conservation Teacher of the Year award this year from the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts. Neumann teaches life science, anatomy, environmental science and photography at Model Laboratory High School in Richmond. ZAMBIA Carley Lovorn (99-01) is the director of El Centro in Tupelo, Mississippi. e Hispanic resource center intregrates Spanish-speaking residents into American culture. TONGA University of Washington epidemiology professor Laura Koutsky (76-77) is credited with developing the world’s first human papillomavirus vaccine along with Dr. Kathrin Jansen. e vaccine is the first to combat cervical-cancer, which Josh Swiller (94-96) recently published his first book, e Unheard: A Memoir of Deafness and Africa. e book is a memoir of Swiller’s service as a deaf volunteer in the disease, poverty, violence and friendship of Munungu, Zambia and is published by Henry Holt & Company. e book was recently ranked No. 31 on the New York Times list of non-fiction paperback bestsellers.
