Winston-Salem Business Magazine - February 2008 - (Page 11) BUSINESS Front weave the bamboo and glass yarns into the high-tech fabric. According to Stan Eskridge, the president of Entegrion, this bandage “would not have happened without the resources of the folks in Winston-Salem.” Carolina Narrow Fabric Company is a family-owned company founded in 1929. From the beginning, the company has manufactured custom designed, specialty textiles for a variety of applications in many different industries, from medical to electrical, automotive to aerospace. Its current workforce of 115 includes many long-term employees, who according to Jeffrey Freeman, vice president of manufacturing, are the backbone of the company. For over 20 years, Carolina Narrow Fabric has been involved in the medical industry, manufacturing such products as traditional cotton gauzes for wound care and casting materials for broken bones. It also has experience working with the Food and Drug Administration to obtain FDA approval on its medical textiles. So the company was the perfect partner for the development of Entegrion’s new bandage. Entegrion and Carolina Narrow Fabric worked together for approximately two years to develop the product as it is today. The key to the product’s efficacy is in the weave. Carolina Narrow Fabric tried many different weaves before it came upon the one that gave the bandage the best blood clotting ability. Extensive research has proven that the patented Stasilon-FR bandage provides a more significant reduction in blood loss when compared to the current gauzes used. The bandage is FDA approved for both prescription and over-the-counter use. Considering the aging population and its increased use of anti-coagulants, the new bandage may be just what the doctor ordered. Entegrion’s Stasilon-FR bandages are now being distributed to EMS organizations and other first responders throughout the southeast. The bandages are also now available to the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan in limited quantities, with large-scale distribution planned sometime in 2008. The company also plans to sell the bandage directly to the consumer in the near future. Based on their successful collaboration, Entegrion and Carolina Narrow Fabric has other medical textile products in development, including one specifically designed for nose bleeds. Using hemotologic technology from the University of North Carolina, the innovation of Entegrion, and the medical textile manufacturing expertise of Carolina Narrow Fabric, the Stasilon-FR bandage is truly a North Carolina product. By working with North Carolina’s textile industries, biotech companies like Entegrion could help breath life back into the textile industry – a welcome thought to Carolina Narrow Fabric and Winston-Salem.
