Winston-Salem Business Magazine - February 2008 - (Page 18) Twin City Cleaners Gives Back with Prom Dress Drive By Judi Lawson Wallace equipment. “The prom dress drive is a natural fit for us,” explained Dempsey, “ because we have special expertise in formalwear and wedding gowns.” This year Dempsey has decided to add a new twist to generate more excitement about the prom dress drive by sponsoring a special event: The Most Amazing Bridesmaid’s Dress Contest. Former bridesmaids are encouraged to pull dresses from the back of their closets and select a category under which to enter the contest: Most Beautiful, Most Unlovely, Most Outrageous. Contest participants will have the choice of donating their dresses to the Enchanted Prom Memories Dress Giveaway, although that is not a requirement for participation. Finalists in the contest will be required to appear in person with their dresses before the panel of judges who will select one winner in each category. Each of the three winners will receive a gift certificate for $200 worth of dry cleaning at any of three locations of Twin City Cleaners & Wedding Gown Specialists. Entry forms for the contest are available online at www.twincitycleaners.com or at any of the three Twin City Cleaners locations: The Towers Shopping Center, 205 S. Stratford Road in Winston-Salem; Tanglewood Commons Shopping Center at the intersection of US 158 and Harper Road in Clemmons; and The Oaks at the intersection of Shallowford and Williams Roads in Lewisville. The deadline for entries is Monday, March 3, 2008. Winners will be announced in mid-March. For those women just interested in donating dresses, Twin City Cleaners collects long and short, formal dresses in good condition, such as bridesmaid, cocktail, and prom dresses. The greatest need is for very small sizes—like 0s, 2s, and 4s—and large sizes such as 16-24. Items donated are tax-deductible through the YWCA. To obtain a receipt for tax purposes, donors will need to complete a form when items are dropped off. Twin City Cleaners & Wedding Gown Specialists has found a special niche for giving back to the community. What can your business contribute? PHOTO BY RENEE HONEY Every business—even small ones—has something to contribute to the community in which it does business. While large corporations’ megabuck contributions make media headlines, small businesses also do their part for the community, often working behind the scenes with inkind donations that boost local nonprofit organizations. Bailey Dempsey of Twin City Cleaners & Wedding Gown Specialists’ successful strategy for giving back to the community involves partnering with the YWCA of WinstonSalem on Enchanted Prom Memories Dress Giveaway. Now in its fifth year, the event collects and then gives away new and slightly used formal dresses to area high school students. Twin City Cleaners donates its services to collect dresses at each of its three locations and then clean and press the dresses for the giveaway in late March. In past years as many as 350 dresses have been given away, so cleaning and pressing requires lots of time and special 18 FEBRUARY 2008 http://www.twincitycleaners.com
