Building Prosperity from Africa’s Natural Wealth The place to baptize a young nature enthusiast is Africa. For children who love mammals, take them to Tanzania, with its wide diversity of habitats and rich list of ungulates, predators, and abundant small mammals. For budding birders, whisk them off to Kenya, with the world’s best birding route traversing the steamy, lowland forests along the coast to the scree slopes of the high mountains. And for neophyte botanists, the Cape Town region of South Africa offers the highest concentration of spectacular flowering plant species on Earth. Visitors smitten by Africa either never come home or never stop returning. The late Henri Nsanjama, who was WWF vice president for Africa programs, inspired many WWF staffers to marvel at the wonders of his homeland. If Henri were with us today, he would be proud of what WWF has accomplished and how the programs he encouraged now benefit Africans and their wildlife heritage. In the rain forest belt, the Congo Basin Forest Partnership stands as one of the most ambitious efforts to conserve an intact tropical wilderness. The LIFE project of Namibia has achieved the holy grail of conservation: community-based natural resource management at scale. Here indigenous groups marginalized under the apartheid system have taken control of their own destinies and restored the lions, cheetahs, black rhinos and other wildlife native to the world’s richest dry land. The CAPE program in South Africa and the Coastal East Africa initiative are exploring new ways in which local communities can prosper economically through conservation. One new WWF project to watch is unfolding in Tanzania’s Eastern Arc Mountains. Designed by the newly minted Natural Capital Project, this program seeks to develop an innovative payment-for-ecosystem-services scheme based on valuing and conserving Africa’s most precious natural resource: freshwater. The cities along Tanzania’s coast rely on runoff from the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains for drinking water, irrigation and the hydropower that makes 50 percent of their electricity. Payments to upland landowners to protect the forests from which this freshwater flows will help conserve the second-oldest rain forest on Earth. Freshwater conservation is of global concern, and nowhere more so than in arid Africa. The timely partnership between The Coca-Cola Company and WWF begun in July 2007 was born out of a desire to conserve and protect freshwater resources. The crown jewel of the program is the conservation of the basin containing Lake Malawi, bordering Henri Nsanjama’s home country. Henri’s legacy is the profound belief that wildlife and people can share the wealth of the Earth, even in the poorest regions.
