The President’s Report Climate: This Century’s Most Pervasive Environmental Issue By Carter Roberts The looming threat of climate change has captured the attention of the media and the American public. Not since the early 1970s have we seen such mobilization around an environmental issue. The new activism is warranted and the entire WWF Network is aligned to combat the catastrophic effects of a rapidly warming planet. Last fall, WWF adopted a new climate change strategy that emphasizes four key areas: (1) international policy, (2) forests and carbon, (3) adaptation and resilience, and (4) transformational partnerships with businesses in key sectors. I want to share with you briefly the thinking behind each of these areas and some examples of actions already being undertaken. International Policy Recognizing the need to broaden the reach of climate change policy, the WWF Network is already at work on two initiatives: one, contributing to a successor to the international climate treaty known as the Kyoto Protocol, and the other, establishing an effective forest-carbon program. Until now, WWF’s Global Climate Program has focused on reducing emissions from the power, transport and industrial sectors, which together produce roughly 80 percent of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. But the other 20 percent comes from forest loss and land use. While most of us know that coal plants, cars and factories emit greenhouse gases, fewer are aware that CO2 is also released into the atmosphere when trees are harvested and burned. The same thing happens when soils are disturbed by land-use activities like tilling farmland and building infrastructure. Bottom line: carbon – in this context, meaning all greenhouse gases – is the chief culprit contributing to climate change, and we need to heed all of its sources. Our new directions in policy work will accomplish this. Forests and Carbon We want to assure that forest-carbon emissions are part of future climate agreements; their inclusion is crucial to more fully addressing greenhouse gas emissions, and they were in large part omitted from the 4 worldwildlife.org http://worldwildlife.org
