World Wildlife Fund's Gift Catalog - 2008-2009 - (Page 62) A Place Apart Madagascar Why does it matter? The wombat, koala and duck-billed platypus are fascinating creatures that live only in Australia. This principle is called “endemism.” Species that are endemic to one ecosystem do not live in the wild anywhere else. High rates of endemism occur in places where species evolved over millions of years in relative isolation. That’s why places that are geographically remote, such as Australia, have more endemic species. Protecting endemic species is a conservation priority. That means protecting the unique habitats of Australia, Madagascar, Galápagos and elsewhere. Biodiversity “Down Under ” Adopt a Koala Maybe you’ve heard them called “koala bears,” but they aren’t really bears at all. They are a species all their own, most closely related to the wombat. Koalas subsist almost entirely on eucalyptus leaves, but now climate change may be depleting their food supply. $100 $50 $25 CTKO FREE with $50 donation or more! 62 Your donation will be used in general support of WWF’s conservation efforts around the world. http://www.worldwildlife.org/ogc/species_SKU.cfm?cqs=CTKO&sc=AWY0900WCN11
