Goodridge helped shape York during difficult times, as the United States struggled between slavery and abolition. He was one of the most successful businessmen of his day as well as a stationmaster along the Underground railroad. Born a slave in Baltimore, Goodridge was sent to York at age 6 to work as an apprentice and was given his freedom 10 years later. Goodridge learned the barber trade, ran a slew of prominent businesses including a photography studio, candy shop, public bathhouse, and owned several railroad cars used to help others find the freedom he had worked so hard to obtain. In 1859, Goodridge hid Osborn Perry Anderson, a compatriot of John Brown, in one of his buildings. Pour washed blueberries into buttered casserole (1-1/2 quart size). Sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar. Cream 1/4 cup shortening (or butter), 1/4 cup sugar and 1 egg together. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add this to creamed mixture alternately with 1/2 cup milk. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes. Spoon out while hot and serve with whipped cream, ice cream or milk.
