Carl Helrich Allegro Vineyards MEETthe YOrkEr Carl Helrich, winemaker and co-owner of Allegro Vineyards, has been bottling his diverse brand of wine since 2001. The newest steward to Allegro’s vines, Carl pays homage to previous owners, musician brothers John and Tim Crouch. John and Tim first planted the Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 1973. Today, the original vines, among the oldest in Pennsylvania, continue to produce delicate and complex grapes. Carl’s passion for winemaking is clear as he talks about Allegro and the region. “We get really interesting grapes that produce full-bodied, rich earthy flavors that reflect the landscape,” he says. Not only does Carl craft remarkable wine, he drinks it.
