Randy and Sarita Shoemaker created the Simi Valley, Calif.-based outdoor fitness program in 2006 as a way to help people improve their fitness. Get Tough on Fitness! Our thoughts during this time of year are more apt to be about impending Thanksgiving feasts than about exercise. Busy schedules, work and family commitments also increasingly deter men, women and children from maintaining an active lifestyle — but that’s where Randy and Sarita Shoemaker come in. Concerned by the rising obesity levels and the increasing number of healthrelated issues facing American families today, the dynamic husband and wife team, who are certified lifestyle and weight management consultants, sought to find a way to create a fun and exciting outdoor fitness program. Their answer: 805 Boot Camp. Combining high-intensity drills with the accountability of group workouts, the Shoemakers help men and women of all backgrounds and fitness levels achieve their goals. “My personal fitness philosophy is about exercising outdoors, where you can breathe in lots of fresh air and feel stimulated. Combine that with good eating habits and you’ll have a healthy, sustainable lifestyle,” Randy Shoemaker says. The Shoemakers’ fitness values have resounded with many. Since opening their boot camp over a year ago, more than 400 campers have run, lunged, dipped and crunched their way to better health. And while Randy and Sarita aim to expand their business by hiring more trainers and doubling the number of boot campers, they’re also intent on maintaining a local feel. “We feel it’s important to support our local community as much as we can. Our business model and the philanthropic work we do benefit the Simi Valley community, our friends, family and neighbors,” Randy says. It’s this dedication to community that has also drawn the Shoemakers to Telesis Community Credit Union, where individuals like Christina Hoctor, Business Services Officer from the Simi Valley-Tapo Canyon branch, work tirelessly everyday to provide friendly, personalized service. Get Fit the Boot Camp Way Each boot camp, held in Simi Valley, Calif., is six weeks long. Boot campers meet five days a week for an hourlong workout while simultaneously receiving nutritional information to maximize their results. Campers are evaluated at the beginning of each program and placed in one of three groups — Alpha, Bravo or Charlie — based on their fitness ability. They are also continually measured to track their progress. What’s more, man’s best friend can now join in on the fun. With advanced notice, boot campers can bring their dogs on visits to recreational areas such as Corriganville Park in Simi Valley for invigorating workouts on the trails and in canyons. These sessions are a fun, bonding experience between pet owner and canine companion and also provide a good way for the entire family to remain committed to their health.
