We’ve given away everything from exotic Hawaiian vacations to a 50-inch SONY HDTV, with more fabulous prizes being revealed! Here’s a look at some of our recent winners: Planting the Future Think that teens are always up to trouble? Think again. A creative group of teens in El Segundo, Calif., takes tree hugging to the next level. They’re out to save the urban environment, one tree at a time. Tree Musketeers’ mission is to “empower young people to be leaders of environmental and social change in their communities.” Founded in 1987 by third-grade Girl Scouts, Tree Musketeers has been instrumental in growing both the urban forest and multiple generations of concerned community leaders. Since the first tree took root 20 years ago, an untold number of trees have been planted and cared for by millions of kids worldwide. “We didn’t keep track very well until 1998, but we’ve planted a million plus trees since then,” says 16-year-old Fernando Vallin, a junior at El Segundo High School and youth director for Tree Musketeers. Now the organization tracks volunteer hours, which reached 1,023,541 hours (from 1,016,437 youth) in only nine years. Although the majority of the volunteer work takes place in the United States, Tree Musketeers’ campaigns have planted trees as far away as Africa and the Middle East. Once people catch the vision, Vallin says it doesn’t take much convincing to get them involved. “We all just want to help out,” he says. Angeline G. Local Girl Scouts Go Green “A Girl Scout always leaves a place better than she found it.” This simple motto is the philosophy to which Girl Scout Troop #568, in Simi Valley, Calif., aspires. Led by Monique LaFrenais, wife of Telesis employee Gary LaFrenais, the group of 15 Girl Scouts ages 8 to 10 years old, have long been champions for recycling and beautifying their neighborhoods. At every Girl Scout meeting, they collect recyclable items and use the money that’s earned to fund camping trips and badge work. The troop also participates in beach clean-ups and is planning a tree planting project this fall. FALL 07 15
