W hen I launched D&A Media in 1993, I was confident in my sales abilities, so I thought that rather than make money for other people, I would rather go out and make it for myself. After 15 years of ups, downs, frustrating times, exciting times, opportunities, very late nights, learning and listening, I have come to realize that there is a little more to it than just making the sale. KNOW YOUR GOALS When you start your business, have a very clear vision of where you want to be in 1 year, 3 years or whatever time scale works for you. Otherwise how will you know when you arrive? Break down these goals into smaller goals and plan how you are going to achieve them. Keep records of this, it is a fantastic way of looking at how much you have achieved since you started and reminding yourself of what is yet to come. STAY FOCUSSED It is absolutely fundamental to any successful business that customers buy from you. Whatever else you do in your business, if customers buy from you, your business can achieve more. This may sound daunting in today’s climate, and how do you ensure that they buy from you and not your competitor? I could write pages on this telling you of my experiences, but to keep you interested, I’ll give you the most crucial areas to look into: OFFER VALUE FOR MONEY Always be competitive, but don’t just compete on price. Be proud of your prices and justify the cost to your client. People buy from people, and purchases are made on emotions, so it doesn’t matter if your competitors product/ service is the cheapest on offer, your client will not always buy from them, because it ‘just doesn’t feel right’. This is why time and time again, our clients will come back to us - not just because of the range of products we can offer, but also for the level of service we provide for our clients. DELIGHT YOUR CUSTOMER You have to mean what you say, we all know what it is like to be in a telephone queue, waiting for your turn, and not getting through to the right person or getting cut off.
