Raw 03 - November 2008 - (Page 20) RAW QHR SOLUTIONS ne problem with Human Resources (HR) is that, a little like five-a-day or measuring your alcohol intake, we all know it’s good for us, and our companies but we just don’t have the time. HR, or Personnel as it used to be known, is one of those things that we always think we will get round to one day, just not today. Another problem is that the whole area of Employment Law is such a minefield that many are scared to start, reasoning that, hopefully, nothing untoward will happen and, therefore, it won’t matter that it hasn’t been sorted. As an HR consultant by far the majority of my clients come to me because something has happened and they need help, urgently, to sort it out. The reality is that dealing with a disciplinary action, a redundancy situation or some other issue can take hours, if not days, of work if the systems are not there, far more time than it would have taken to get a proper system together in the first place. The myths surrounding HR are the stuff of legend; nobody understands it (some do); it isn’t necessary (it is); employees have no rights anyway (they do); employers have no rights anyway O THE FACTS, NOT TH (they do); it is a nightmare (it can be but shouldn’t be), I could go on but I’m sure you get the point. I think most employers would agree that a business can stand or fall on the quality of its employees, the human resource of any business is by far its most valuable asset and yet it is the resource that is often the most neglected. We take care of our customers, our suppliers, our stock, our machinery and our premises but not our people but it’s the people that can make or break a business and it’s the people that can cause the most problems. So, what are the facts? Any company that employs five or more people (and that includes HUMAN RESOURCES! E FICTION the boss) is required by law to have, as a minimum, a proper Contract of Employment and employees are entitled to receive their contract within 13 weeks of starting work. It will not be a surprise to read that I believe all employers; even those with less than five employees, should also comply with this law. In addition there should also be policies and procedures on a range of areas including Disciplinary; Grievance; Code of Conduct; Contractual Probationary Period; 20 millionimpossible.com http://www.millionimpossible.com
