RAW COLIN STROUD A Little bit of Cheese in your Web I was given a book last night called “Who Moved My Cheese?” written by Dr Spencer Johnson which has the subtitle “An Amazing Way to Deal With Change In Your Work and In Your Life”. This book is a childlike story of two mice and two “Littlepeople” who live in a maze called Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw. They are supposed to represent the four different ways in which we deal with what life presents us with. I won’t go any further than that just in case you feel you would like to read the book after you have heard what I have to say. I must admit I love Dr Zeuss but I didn’t think this was going to be “Green Eggs and Ham” or “The Cat in the Hat”. One thing I was sure of was that it was presented to me with the best of intentions and the touching handwritten message inside the front cover made me read it (under duress) last night. In my opinion what the book is designed to do is make you question whether you are pro-active enough, whether you search for new challenges, notice change and whether you are ready for it. The book is reputed to have helped thousands of people question themselves, resulting in improvements in a number of areas including their careers, businesses, relationships and even marriages! “Who Moved My Cheese?” has sold over 21 million copies worldwide which means even if you don’t agree with it, many have and it deserves to be taken seriously. It doesn’t take too long to read and I was pleasantly surprised how much I took from it! Firstly it gave me something to write about this month (which was becoming a worry) and secondly it did make me take a look at myself without having to go through someone else (pretending they understand me) appraising my character. I’m sure Sigmund Freud would have something to say about that but he can run off with his mother for all I care. Some of the people who have written articles for Raw Entrepreneur have been very open about their personal lives and it has been pointed out to others (Me amongst them) that we could do with opening up a bit. Now I don’t have a heartbreaking story of overcoming adversity or struggling against all odds, I think we should leave that for Captain Scott or that fella that runs with springs instead of legs – believe me, you would find their stories a little more interesting – but I can tell you that this book made me question www.millionimpossible.com Impossible Plc whether I can change, have changed and will change in the future. Have I changed? Of course I have! We all do don’t we? I’ve done a number of different jobs, dealt with bereavements, embarked on relationships (and seen them end), had children, been skint, been comfortable, changed careers, considered new careers, built friendships, lost friends – some good, some bad – and so I don’t think I’m any different to anybody else. I might have seen more of these things than some of the people I work with now because I’m the oldest (Oh God I admitted it!) but have I dealt with change well enough to be happy with it? 16 millionimpossible.com http://www.millionimpossible.com http://www.millionimpossible.com
