Raw 02 - September 2008 - (Page 47) love to learN @ CoaCHWorKS RAW Climbing the learning ladder to achievement or, becoming the you you were meant to be W hen Gill Woon started her coaching practice, ‘Coachworks’, just over two years ago, she had no idea that she would help so many people of all ages and from all backgrounds to make the most of their learning experiences and to discover and fulfil their true potential. As an experienced coach, trainer and presenter, she already knew that people can often achieve more than they ever dreamed, given the right support. Now, specialising in helping people to improve their learning (memory, concentration and focus, communication skills) through a combination of coaching and therapy and techniques aimed to overcome specific learning disabilities like dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, and ADD/ ADHD, Gill is achieving some remarkable results. Everyone is born with the capacity to learn, although we might have different preferences for how we go about it. It’s part of life - we never stop learning, although we might not realise we’re actually doing so at the time. A key part of Gill’s work is to help her clients consciously engage in learning rather than passively accept what they are told or given - to become empowered and aware of what is happening when they learn and how they are acquiring skills and knowledge - to be in control of their own learning. Gill typically establishes with the client what he or she wants to address - whether memory issues, focus and concentration, self-esteem and giving them evidence that they can achieve what they are aiming for, helping to restore their belief in themselves. Gill listens to clients, challenges and stretches them in question and answer sessions woven in among the exercises and activities. One of her aims is for clients to enjoy sessions and have fun wherever possible. Gill has worked with individuals and specialising in helping people to improve their learning (memory, concentration and focus, communication skills) handwriting, spelling, reading or mathematics or communication skills. She then designs specific learning goals based on this with the client. Gill and the client will then draw up a ‘contract’ to deliver a series of sessions aimed at achieving these goals. The sessions help the client to develop the skills, breaking them down into simpler building blocks and going at a rate which suits them. As part of this Gill will discuss the client’s preferred learning style and tailor sessions and suggest work to be done which fits that style. Gill spends a lot of time building clients’ organisations as diverse as DTI (now BERR), DSS, the Public Record Office, Townswomen’s Guild, Business and Professional Women’s Federation, the Islington Chamber of Commerce and the Girls’ Dayschool Trust, designing and delivering training courses and workshops on personal development, change management and communication skills. Gill’s passion for learning and helping others make the most of their learning has led to a number of articles and a book (currently in production) on aspects of learning, inspiration and the role of writing in learning.
