The Xplor View - July 2008 - (Page 12) The generated QR code is returned to the user’s document composition system, which places the QR at the desired location(s) on the formatted transaction document or direct mailer. Documents are created with one or more QRs containing specified demographic parameters and application-specific data. The recipient receives and opens the document. Recipients with no QR reader are instructed by the document to perform an easy, one-time download onto their mobile phone. The document’s QR code(s) are scanned with a mobile phone to launch the recipient to a the specified mobile web destination to: Encoding to the COPI CodeZ subroutine • Immediately pay the amount due • Enter an e-commerce portal to initiate a purchase • View personalized media-rich product information • View personalized video commercials • Initiate a dialogue and information exchange with the sender • Via a mobile phone’s GPS coordinates, identify the nearest bricks and mortar outlet best matched to the recipient’s demographic profile • Acquire a personalized coupon(s) via SMS delivery, direct download, or localized print. The coupon’s QR code can contain all of the important demographic profile information to allow marketers and retailers at redemption time to capture information about the specific individuals using the promotions. Although QR is ISO-certified and is the most widely used code in Japan, Korea, and throughout Asia, it has not been heavily deployed in North America due to the lagging technology of U.S. cellular network providers. This is now being addressed, with most providers having plans for integrating QR into their networks. Handsets from vendors like Nokia are being factory-loaded with QR reader software. In addition, major vendors to the mobile web, mobile marketing, and mobile payments systems are preparing to introduce QR-based solutions. QR provides marketing professionals with access to technology that enables powerful implementation of transaction and marketing document-based multi-channel interactivity. All CodeZ products: • Operate on Windows, Unix, OS/390, and OS/400 platforms • Provide for ASCII or EBCDIC input • Are vendor-independent • Include one font for printing the barcodes • Support optional fonts for IBM AFP Xerox Metacode, PCL, PostScript, , and TrueType platforms • Provide a unified interface to all mainframe document composition systems Conclusion In a world where interaction with customers is essential, effective use of QR codes has the ability to transform documents as we know them today. Users can point their mobile phones at an ad in a magazine to take advantage of an offer. They can authorize payment of a bill via their mobile phone. The QR code makes multi-channel interactivity a reality for organizations by enabling recipients to move quickly and easily from the printed world to the digital world. COPI Computer Output Print & Internet (COPI), a leading barcode supplier, has announced CodeZ QR availability.
