The Xplor View - July 2008 - (Page 20) Xplor UK & Ireland supports Total Print! Expo variation as there are printers and purchasing managers. Perhaps this event might be an opportunity to try and clarify what short-run actually means in the industry. Once again Xplor UK & Ireland has been asked to provide the educational conference content for one of the UK’s leading printing exhibitions. For the last two years we have supported Digital Print World (DPW) providing two days of educational content with the Master Class programs and are pleased to continue this support through their transition into Total Print! Expo (TPE). Total Print! Expo is a dedicated show for the short run print market. Taking place at Earls Court 2, London from 14-16th October 2008, the timing of the show is perfect as it is the first opportunity for many companies to demonstrate new equipment launched at Drupa to the UK market. Total Print! Expo incorporates and builds on the successful DPW event to showcase complementary digital and offset technologies, software, finishing, materials, and services. The evolution of the show is in step with the industry which is rapidly integrating complementary production techniques and processes to maximise added-value services. “There has to be a complete shift of focus and Total Print! Expo is leading the way,” says Event Director Richard Gayle. “The exhibition will run the gamut from design to mailroom with every step in between. The spotlight will be on the production of added-value creative solutions and end products and the role technology plays in the process. As well as over 100 leading suppliers, Total Print! Expo will also feature an extensive educational programme which includes a Print Buyers’ forum, Hosted Buyers programme, in-depth workshopstyle executive master classes powered by Xplor Document University, and the print industry debates.” What’s going to be different? Well the print industry has been undergoing a transition itself with the advances of digital printing technologies and software platforms to support the various workflow requirements. In reality we now have a number of print service providers with mixed technologies—offset and digital—from an array of vendors seeking to satisfy the customer requirements. Many of those requirements are short-run applications with a mixture of personalised and non-personalised items. The definition of ‘short-run’ is still very much a relative term depending on the business requirements and the technology being applied with as much While most printers are equipped with an armoury of machinery to tackle any job, quantity is no longer an issue in the mature, but not static, UK print market. The emphasis today is on the printed product—its business application, its price, its quality, its turnaround speed, and its effectiveness in the market. Heidelberg UK is just one of the major supporters of the show. George Clarke, Managing Director of Heidelberg UK, says “Total Print! Expo was born out of Digital Print World and must retain that short run focus and be a national not a regional show. Heidelberg is keen to be there because we have many products complementary to digital print which are an ideal solution for doing short-run or ultra short-run work as well as long-run work cost effectively.” For more information on Total Print!
