The Xplor View - October 2008 - (Page 28) Workflow for Transaction Documents. Where else can you get educated by the folks who have been doing this from the start of AFP? Nowhere but the XDU! But, wait! There is more! (No, I am not selling Cillit Bang, but this is really good stuff… ) Perhaps you are not the technical type. Perhaps you are on the sales side of the business and looking for new ideas, new tools, and new pitches. XDU has them! Jim Hackett from Indivia recorded his presentation on the Power of Individualization as well as his essential session on how to increase sales results. Ed Hunt provided his impressive presentation on how to use the web to create dynamic sales materials, and Peter Muir from BIZUCate added a few pieces on essentials of communication. I could go into the retail value of a session like this, but you get the idea. XDU equals one-stop shopping for education! Wondering about how to plan for technology upgrades or what really happens once you have decided to install new equipment? XDU has the classes. You can check in on my Making Sound Technology Decisions, drawn from the XDU class by the same name, and the fabulous Cindy Johnson, edp giving the facts behind Integrating New Equipment. There are other presentations that can walk you through the security issues, too! I mentioned colour. Colour is the challenge for the new millennium because it poses a challenge to legacy workflows, storage requirements, and output technologies. Red is not always red, and blue is not always blue. And, it is worse when your red has a specific brand Pantone colour requirement! Wondering what you need to know? No better person than Terry Wozniak of Kodak—the guy I always go to on colour questions, to provide two presentations you should not miss. His Basics of Colour is the perfect starting point if you are new to the fun of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, and his Lessons from the Business World and the World of Colour is the perfect follow-on. Remember that it is not enough to get your web folks over to work on colour for print. You will need to learn about how your colour technology impacts your design choices, and Terry can help! And these are not all of the offerings. Is it any wonder that Kodak would want to partner with such a fabulous education initiative? Remember that it does not end with what is on XDU online right now. Coming soon to your world are even more XDU presentations. Not just at the chapter meetings and events like Total Print! Expo, but also by way of additions to the online slate. By the way, you can help! If you have a presentation that fits the bill, Xplor would like to talk to you! The wonderful thing about Xplor presentations has always been that they are given by experts from around the industry, including vendors who are normally selling their products but set aside the sales pitches to make their contribution to pure education. These experts bring their years of knowledge, their experiences, and their access to best practices and even a few disasters for the benefit of the industry. Where else will you find someone willing to stand up and publicly share a story about a project that went wrong? It is not just the education that makes Xplor a valuable proposition to anyone who works with data-driven documents. It is the networking and the relationships that you develop. Over the years I have benefitted greatly from being able to call an Xplor buddy to solve a problem, get a reference before a software or hardware purchase, find a new employee, or find a consultant to help a customer. Some of the most knowledgeable people in the print and mail business around the world are Xplor members, and we are proud to be associated with all of them. Going forward we know that Xplor will continue to grow, chapters will increase their activity, regions will add more chapters, and more XDUs will appear on the list of events. There is still work to be done to build the XDU concept, but the value in supporting the activity is clear. In coming months watch for announcements of more Xplor events and watch the website for more XDU recorded modules. Kodak is proud to be the global sponsor of the Xplor Document University. All of us who support Xplor activities inside of Kodak are excited about this sponsorship and we hope to see you at an Xplor meeting soon.
