Golf Escapes 2009 - (Page 54) The MonTgoMerie, Dubai The Montgomerie, Dubai tests golfers with 81 bunkers and 14 lakes. Monty’s Dubai masterpiece Play the Montgomerie, Dubai, and experience one of the world’s best courses. N o one plots their way round a golf course like Colin Montgomerie. The eight-time European Order of Merit champion sees ways to outthink even the toughest of tests and for this reason he possesses all the qualities needed to be a top-class course designer. Well, every quality apart from one. The final ingredient is one no designer can affect themselves. The final key necessary to create a great layout is the natural beauty of the land they are given the chance to work with. The template for The Montgomerie, Dubai was stunning. A 265-acre green oasis made up of 123 acres of turf, 49 acres of man-made lakes, and 93 acres of landscaped gardens. Land that cried out for a world-class championship golf course to be built on it, and that is exactly what Colin Montgomerie and co-designer Desmond Muirhead have done. On paper The Montgomerie, Dubai is impressive. A glance at the facts and figures reveals golfers pit their wits against 7,396 yards, 81 bunkers and 14 lakes. In the flesh the resort, which is managed by Troon Golf, is simply sensational. The Montgomerie, Dubai was voted Troon Golf’s 2006 Facility Of The Year which it won over 200 properties in Troon Golf’s portfolio. Few places in the world can offer rolling links fairways set under the beating sun and surrounded by desert, yet that is what has been created here and ultimately it is this vision and ability to push the accepted borders of course architecture that makes this design so special.
