Ronen To Address Disruptive Media
A

vner Ronen, CEO & Co-Founder
of Boxee, will speak at the
upcoming 2013 NAB Show, the
annual conference and expo for
professionals who create, manage
and distribute entertainment across
all platforms.
Ronen will deliver the keynote
address to the Disruptive Media
Conference on Wednesday, April
10, at 1.45pm.
The idea for Boxee was born in
2004 when Ronen and four friends
began using Xbox Media Center,
open source software for the
original Xbox that allowed people
to play digital media on their TVs.
They became members of XBMC’s
open source community and in 2007
imagined a way to take the platform
even further, founding Boxee.
Ronen and a team of 11 others
worked to extend the base code
for XBMC with online sources like
Netflix and YouTube as well as
incorporate social networking into
Boxee, which became available as
free software for users to download
and run on a home theatre PC.
Since then, Boxee has released

two branded consumer electronic
devices dedicated to running the
Boxee software. Currently, with
Boxee’s newest device, Boxee TV,
the company has introduced the
world’s ﬁrst unlimited cloud DVR,
blending live TV integration with
over-the-top streaming services.
Named one of Rolling Stone’s
Top Agents of Change, Ronen is
“the internet generation’s everyman,”
according to Boxee, striving to make

personalised, internet-delivered TV
a reality and bringing video from
everywhere, to any device, at any
time. Under Ronen, Boxee has won
numerous awards each year since
its founding, including the 2008
Consumer Electronics Association’s
Innovation award, G4’s Best of the
Best products of CES in 2009 and
2010’s Last Gadget Standing.
Prior to co-founding Boxee,
Ronen was the Head of Corporate
Development and M&A for
Comverse, Inc., a leading provider
of software and service to telecom
service providers. Ronen was
responsible for acquisitions valued
at $450 million, which were key to
the company’s evolution from a
voicemail company to a billing and
VAS provider.
Ronen joined Comverse in 2002
when they acquired Odigo, a
company he co-founded in 1998.
Odigo was one of the early instant
messaging services on the web,
serving more than eight million users
worldwide and earning Ronen the
2002 honour of being a member of
Crain’s 40 Under 40. His fascination

in harnessing the internet to make
peoples’ lives better started when
Ronen served four-and-a-half years
in the Israeli Defense Force in the
special computer unit, MAMRAM.
The Disruptive Media Conference,
produced in partnership with Digital
Media Wire, gathers professionals
who oversee the digital and
interactive divisions within their
companies to explore developments
in online video, mobile and branded
entertainment.
The two half-day programmes
covers disruptive media as well as
more traditional OTT technologies
and how these are impacting
business models for distribution
and consumer engagement.

IO Industries Upgrade 2KSDI Camera Features
anadian-based IO Industries has
released ﬁrmware updates for
the Flare 2KSDI camera including
new 2K and 1080i output formats,
improved auto-exposure control
and a RAW video mode.
The Flare 2KSDI is a compact, POVstyle camera with a global shutter
CMOS sensor, uncompressed 3G/
HD-SDI outputs, a rugged aluminium
body and interchangeable lenses.
Configuration is easy with the
handheld remote control, making
the 2KSDI the ultimate mini-camera
for live event coverage, television
and cinema production, aerial
imaging and many other HD video
applications.
The camera is designed around
a 2/3” global shutter CMOS
sensor (12.7mm diagonal) with a
full resolution of 2048x1088 pixels.
Unlike traditional rolling shutter
CMOS sensors, global shutter
sensors capture motion without
wobble distortion or 'jello' effect.
And the 2/3” optical format allows
a larger pixel design for higher
sensitivity, while maintaining the
familiar look and depth of ﬁeld of
standard broadcast cameras. For
special applications, 2KSDI models
are available with monochrome

CMOS sensors (no colour ﬁlter array)
providing high optical resolution and
enhanced sensitivity.
All models support singlelink HD-SDI output formats
including 1280x720p (23.9860), 1920x1080p (23.9830), 1920x1080i (50-60)
and 2048x1080p (23.98-30).
Single-link 3G-SDI output
formats are also supported,
including 1920x1080p (50-60)
and 2048x1080p (48-60). All
output formats are 10-bit Y'Cb'Cr'
with 4:2:2 colour sampling, but for
a cinema RAW workﬂow the 10-bit
RAW output mode can be enabled.
For stereoscopic 3D, live broadcast
and other multi-camera applications,
a tri-level sync input is provided.
The camera uses a standard
C-mount allowing many lens
options, including a variety of
compact C-mount lenses as well
as F-mount, B4-mount or PL-mount
lenses (using additional adapters).
EF or EF-S lenses can be attached
and controlled by the camera
using the 2KSDI EF Mount Adapter,
allowing remote control of focus and
aperture settings.
For precise colour accuracy,
each camera is factory-calibrated

to the latest SMPTE 274M (ITU-R
BT.709) international colourimetry,
with presets for 3200K and 5600K.
However, the Colour Correction
Matrix and Saturation controls are
all user-adjustable, allowing colour
matching of the 2KSDI with other
studio cameras.
All settings are fully conﬁgurable
with an easy-to-use handheld
remote and on-screen display. The
on-screen display is overlayed on
the primary SDI output which can
be connected to an SDI monitor or
electronic viewﬁnder. The secondary
SDI output is left clean for connection
to a DVR or broadcast switch. The
control interface is RS-485, allowing

up to 1000' between the remote
control and the camera head.
Software is provided for USB control
from a nearby laptop or tablet, and
all control commands are published
in the manual, allowing integration
with third party remote control panels
(RCPs).
The low-heat and low-power
design means the camera consumes
only 4W (at 12V) but supports
10-19V for use with a variety of
power sources.
Accessory cables are available
with PowerTap adapters for easy
connection to batteries.
