IKAN Pushes The Digital Envelope

O

ne of the biggest challenges
we face as a cinema and digital
video equipment manufacturer is
achieving a balanced compromise
b e t we e n a f f o r d a b i l i t y a n d
functionality, at a time when an
increasing number of companies
are becoming more proliﬁc as we
all chase the pixel.
As we’ve evolved into an
international company supplying
solutions to broadcast, cinema, ENG
shooters, ﬁeld videographers, and
indie ﬁlmmakers, we’ve had to grow
our operations as well, opening the
doorway to populated and remote

places throughout the world.
Our changes have been made
based on the following: market
demand for new and innovative
solutions; consumer feedback;
the nature and state of the global
economy; and harsher work
environments. Exotic places -– rare
gems of opportunity for shooting –
have provided new opportunities
for feedback, as well. Gear tests in
the Sarcophagus of Chernobyl and
extreme conditions in Guatemala
(where only our ID500 LED lights
survived) all emphasise the need
for feature-rich, value-driven,
reliable equipment that is simple,
portable, practical, and affordable
enough to replace.
The reality is, though, that
everyone is pushing the envelope
in one way or another. We recently
upgraded our LED panels with more
consistent colour temperatures
and brighter bulbs, eliminating
that infamous green spike of past
iterations and bettering CRI,
among other improvements to
construction and build quality.
This evolution of LED panels
in the market is far from
over, despite what critics
say. If anything, competition
is heating up for the cool-tothe-touch lights. New methods of

LED-based lighting are constantly
being developed to increase
colour precision and maintain lowenergy consumption. We (in the
motion world) are only beginning
to shed light on the practicality and
surprising functionality they can offer
as we push development. Though
not ideal for all circumstances, the
ﬂexibility and portability of LED
panels are unrivalled, whether for
DMX-controlled studio use or staked
out in the ﬁeld. For these reasons,
we have invested in updating our
best-selling ﬁeld LED lights, the
ID500 and ID1000.
In like mind, our ELEMENTS
rigging solutions bring more
affordable production gear to set
and ﬁeld while supporting new and

old cameras, accessories, third
party tools, and more. We have
designed equipment bags to ﬁt in
airplane compartments; created
Pro Power batteries that are TSAfriendly; and DV power solutions
for awkward cameras like the
Blackmagic Cinema Camera.
The D SERIES of IPS-based fullydigital field monitors have won
awards for their waveform abilities
and image quality at a cost that is
unrivalled in the market; meanwhile,
our MD7 is quickly becoming the
go-to monitor for bright daylight and
steadicam applications because
of its 1100 NITS brightness, low
glare, HDMI-to-SDI transcoding,
pro power support, and 2k
resolution support.
