“The most obvious example is the
allocation of bandwidth,” outlines
Fouchard. “For some of our clients
we analyse content complexity,
whether it is for incoming VOD assets
or for live channels and dynamically
assign bandwidth in relation with
the complexity of the content, while
keeping the video quality constant
for the viewers.
“So while a static movie scene
will demand less bandwidth, and
be assigned automatically a lower
bitrate, a high motion sports scene
would require more. Ateme is able
to collect this information very
accurately from either live channels
or VOD assets and deﬁne with our
clients how to deal with them in terms
of allocated bitrate. This way our
clients never use more storage space
or more satellite bandwidth than they
need to – all for a constant quality.”
Envivio has a new workﬂow for
multiscreen VOD asset creation that
it claims saves a lot of storage space.
Explains Felts: “Typically today, in

order to distribute VOD assets to all
screens, you need to encode multiple
ﬂavours of the same video to be
compatible with a range of devices
to support different resolutions, bitrates, different ﬁle/stream formats
and encryption.
“In our approach, the asset is
encoded and stored once in a
mezzanine format supporting multiple
resolutions, but is encapsulated and
encrypted to the proper ﬁnal format
only when needed – based on user
request and without any delay. By
doing it this way, we can use three
to four times less storage. There is
no need to re-encode a complete
VOD library if a new transport or
encryption format comes out.”

a turnkey app store presence for

compromising on the need to fully
conﬁgure their own portals. The
native application will, in future,
enable additional features on mobile,
such as content controls (DRM),
ofﬂine viewing, mobile capture, and
background uploading.
