How Do You Maximise Your Archive?

GL has partnered with Avid for the
past 11 years and the companies
continue to provide fully integrated
solutions that are required by today's
modern broadcast facilities.
SGL FlashNet, the engine that drives
Avid Interplay | Archive, provides
customers around the world with a
fully integrated MAM/PAM archive
solution. Built around a clustered
architecture, which allows virtually
infinite scalability, FlashNet provides
Avid users with an integrated archive
regardless of size, from the smallest
TV station to the largest network
operation.

Further building on their strong
alliance, SGL recently announced a
new integration with Avid Interplay
Web Services. This latest integration
includes partial file restore, a unique
feature of the Avid Interplay Web
Services solution developed by SGL.
Whilst the fully implemented Avid
Interplay | Archive provides a seamless
user experience, smaller work groups
may require a paired down version.
SGL's support for Avid Interplay Web
Services means that customers can
use the archive capabilities that they
currently require, but can upgrade to
Avid Interplay | Archive at any time in
the future without the need
to re-archive any content.
SGL is the only archive
provider to enable partial
file restore functionality
as part of Avid Interplay
Web Services. This feature
enables operators to easily
select and restore elements
of a clip directly from the

archive in high resolution.
Prior to this, partial file
restore functionality could
only be achieved using the
full Avid Interplay | Archive
system.
As well as providing fully
integrated archive solutions,
SGL is also dedicated to
enabling time and cost
efficiencies as part of the archive
process. The company's FlashNet
Amalgamation Service is designed
to optimise archiving performance
by consolidating multiple small file
archive requests into a single archive
process. Tape archiving technology is
based on placing a required tape into
a drive and then locating the correct
position on the tape before content
can be written. This process naturally
needs a finite period of time, and is
required whether the content to be
stored is large or small. The larger the
file, the higher the ratio between tape
write and tape positioning, the more

efficient the archiving process.
However, while many media files
do require large amounts of storage,
projects will often also require the
storing of much smaller files: JPEGs,
XMLs, and so on. If each of these files
is archived separately then the process
of writing to tape becomes much less
efficient.

Thinklogical KVM technology
for a new mobile production / outside
broadcasting truck. NEP is a leading
worldwide provider of outsourced
solutions to the broadcast and live

event industries, offering technical
services for outside broadcast, studio
production, video display, host
broadcasting and post-production.
Headquartered in the United States,
they have offices in the UK, Ireland, the
Netherlands, Dubai and Australia.
The
new
NEP
truck will feature a
Thinklogical
VX320
6.25 Gbps fibreoptic
video
matrix
switch
and modular, spacesaving Thinklogical KVM
extenders with DWDM
(Dense
Wavelength
Division
Multiplexing)
optics, enabling a flexible
and efficient switching
infrastructure
that
maximises performance
and responsiveness while
reducing the amount of
fibre cabling required to
interconnect the truck's four
production units.

All devices in the truck that use a
keyboard, mouse, joystick or trackball
and a video display for control can be
routed through the Thinklogical system
and assigned to any workstation,
and can then be quickly switched to
another device or workstation. This
"any-to-any" switching capability
allows individual operators to work
from any of the available positions as
needed for increased collaboration,
productivity and workflow efficiency.
This is the third Thinklogical
deployment for NEP. The company has
installed Thinklogical in EN1 and ND1,
two state-of-the-art, multi-unit trucks
designed for US national broadcast
network productions.
