latest developments in broadcast lighting technology...

A

lot of new television lighting tools
have been introduced over the
past 12 months. Most, but certainly not
all, are based on LEDs, which continue
to be the best option in terms of power
efficiency and robustness. This product
sector has long been highly competitive
with many suppliers offering what at
first sight look like very similar devices.
Closer inspection shows a considerable
level of innovation.
AAdynTech's Hurricane Jr is a
lightweight (approximately 2.25 kg)
addition to the company's line of LED
fixtures. The head and the power
supply are IP65 rated to be completely
weatherproof. Operating from 28.8
volts DC power, The Hurricane Jr is
designed to deliver over 650 footcandles at 10 feet. Brightness output
can be controlled from zero to
maximum with no change in colour
temperature, manually or via 5-pin
DMX. The Hurricane Jr comes with a
scrim bag, four lenses (5, 15, 30 and
55 degrees) and two hard gels. A kit
is also available consisting of a road
case, barn doors, speed ring and light
bank. AAdynTech offers an option
lens extender attachment that fits
on the front of the fixture to combine
the multiple LED sources into a single
source of light.
Arri's SkyPanel is a new line of LED
fixtures, initially available in two sizes.
The S60 has a light aperture of 645 x
300 mm. The S30 is half the length of
the S60. Like the L-Series, SkyPanel C
(Colour) versions are fully tuneable.
Colour temperature is adjustable
between 2,800 and 10,000 K. Full
green correction can be achieved at
the turn of a knob. Each LED fixture

is computer calibrated for unit-to-unit
and batch-to-batch consistency, as
well as colour temperature accuracy.

BBS Lighting's new LED Flyer is
a portable lightweight boom light
available as a full kit that provides
rapid setup soft lighting. The head
produces variable-colour 3,000 to
5,600 K overhead soft illumination.
The complete kit includes case, light
head, diffuser, diffuser skirts, power
supply, AC and DC power cords,
an integrated belt pack for remote
control, and a battery plate.

Flolight's Cyclight is designed to
allow a green screen cyclorama to
be illuminated from a single light.
FloLight's patented Light Wave
technology limits the amount of
light at the base and progressively
increases the light at the top.

Bexel's Litepanels Astra 1 × 1 is
a bi-colour LED panel claimed to
deliver a light output up to four times
brighter than traditional LED panels.
This higher intensity results in a
longer throw and illuminates a wider
area, allowing the panel to compete
with strong exterior light sources or
illuminate a large area effectively with
just a single fixture.
Chroma-Q's Color Block 2 Plus
Nano is a compact low profile single
cell version of the Color Block 2 Plus
fixture, which shares the unit's single
colour RGBA optics, high light output
and theatre grade dimming.
Cineo Lighting's Matchbox is a
portable remote phosphor light
for film and television production.
Measuring 83 x 134 x 40 mm and
weighing 425 gm, the Matchbox
outputs light at a variety of accurate
interchangeable colour temperatures.
It can run on any input voltage from
6 to 26 volts DC and comes with an
AC power adapter. The Matchbox
has an on-board zero to maximum
flicker-free dimmer that can work in
conjunction with upstream DMX or
remote dimmers. Colour temperature
is controlled via interchangeable
remote phosphor panels at
the front of the fixture,
available in 2,700, 3,200,
4,300 and 5,600 K.

Frezzi's EyLight is claimed to be
the world's first professional camera
light with an internal quick-swap
rechargeable battery that delivers
sustainable power to traditional
tungsten and LED lamps. Built on
the Frezzi Mini-Fill's form factor, it
is intended for use with handheld
cameras that have no power output to
drive a separate light.
Hive Lighting has redesigned its
Wasp Plasma Par to make it more
versatile, lightweight and affordable
while retaining the same output and
power draw. Featuring a 10 degree
beam, one Wasp Par is claimed to be
capable of doing the work of smaller
HMIs on set. The Pars can be easily
combined into arrays of six lights, each
array producing an output equivalent
to a 4 kilowatt HMI when plugged into
a single wall socket. With each Par
consuming 276 watts, it is possible
to plug up to 12 lamps to a standard
power supply without extra generators
or cabling. Each Wasp Plasma Par
and array features Hive's Daylight
Dial, offering fully tuneable colour
temperature from 4,800 to 7,000
K. The dial is calibrated to minimise
green/magenta shift and offer the
ability to adjust all the way to a deep
blue moonlight. It allows the operator
to track the natural shift of the sun
over the course of a day, as well as

warming or cooling a scene without
the need for gels. The Wasp Par can be
combined with a variety of standard
accessories, including lenses and softboxes. It is also compatible with ETC
Source Four fixtures. A Source Four
barrel can be mounted directly on the
front of the lamp to create a daylight
spot.
K5600's Joker 1600 is a daylight
source. Claimed to be comparable with
over 6kw fixture output, it produces
twice as much light as the Joker 800.
The Joker 1600 is available in three
versions. The 1600 Bug-Lite has a
no-lens bare-bulb output for use in
light banks and lanterns, eliminating
hot spots. It can be used at any angle
including pointing straight down. The
1600 Beamer includes a specular
reflector and a set of four traditional
PAR 64 lenses: medium, wide, superwide and a frosted Fresnel.
The lenses provide varying light
patterns from 5 to 45 degrees. The
1600 Zoom Beamer is a faceted
umbrella style focusable beamer
giving 15 to 65 degrees of even light
output. The fixture has selectable
frequency options to allow high speed
shooting. The Joker 1600 comes in
several kit options, each housed in a
single case.
