COVER STORY CarbonZero solves the problem of climate change fears The organisers of the Business North West are working toward creating an event that is environmentally friendly. The organisers will reduce their carbon footprint through a tree-planting programme called CarbonZero. Sixty-nine trees will be planted in the North West region and around the country to offset carbon emission that will be produced at the event. Event organisers Nationwide Media Group and co2balance have calculated the event’s carbon emissions will be 61.38 tonnes due to the delegate travel, heating and lighting of the venue. The trees will offset the carbon emissions. “Business North West has undertaken a full greenhouse gases audit in order to establish their carbon footprint,” said Suzanne Longworth, UK director (North) at co2balance. “We are delighted that the event will be completely CarbonZero. Nationwide Media Group is setting an example to the other event organisers out there and is proving that putting on a large-scale show can be environmentally friendly.” “Putting on a show like Business North West uses a lot of resources and we are committed to reducing our impact on climate change,” said Scott Hider, managing director of Nationwide Media Group. “Events like this produce thousands of tonnes of carbon every year which is seriously damaging to the environment. In the wake of the credit crunch, there is an even greater need for businesses to be meeting with customers and prospects.
