Across the border in Rwanda and Uganda, gorilla tourism projects have revitalized communities and helped increase the gorilla population. Sustainable tourism in Virunga has the potential to create thousands of jobs and bring in US$235 million a year, which would benefit people and wildlife. But this is only likely to happen if the park is properly valued and protected. Fossil-fuel extraction brings short-term profits for the few. Green development, based on sustainable use of resources and careful stewardship of natural capital, can deliver long-term prosperity for the many.
