This welder is at work on a community hydroelectric project in Mutwanga,
DRC, which uses water from Virunga. The project, set up by the Congolese
Wildlife Authority, will provide electricity to 25,000 people. It will also
power schools, a general hospital and an orphanage, as well as creating
jobs and business opportunities. At the same time, there's a greater
incentive for nearby residents to look after the park's forests and wetlands
which ensure the water supply.
Renewable energy like solar, wind, geothermal and small-scale hydropower
can transform the lives of communities that have little or no access to
electricity. And it can play a major role in the economies of developing
countries, which currently spend huge sums on expensive fossil-fuel
imports and subsidies.
