ESB SErvicES & Electric ireland successfully held their second conference on March 21st which combined the fields of Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability. the conference was attended by managers, team leaders, Health & Safety representatives, Health & Wellbeing coordinators, Sustainability champions, EaP Officers and other delegates from within the directorate. all in attendance shared in the learning on how leadership from within these areas reflects on what safety means to our business. chief Executive, Pat O’doherty, and Executive director Services & Electric ireland, Brid Horan, opened the conference emphasising the importance of integrating good practices and how they clearly influence our own behaviours. they also highlighted how commitment and interaction is critical for our objectives to be met and that ‘for everyone to return home safely in both a good mental and physical state’ was our objective. the strong message of how the Health, Safety and Wellbeing of all our people is essential to ESB as a business was further emphasised by Managers liam Molloy from Electric ireland and Kieran Sweeney from BSc. the day was interspersed with presentations and workshops across ESB and from external presenters. the theme the morning was ‘Mental Health’. tony Bates, Psychologist and founder of Headstrong tony Bates and life and business coach Gerry Kelleher spoke on ‘Mindfulness, being present with an open mind’. they stressed the importance of being mindful A demonstration and Class on Tai Chi was conduced by Master Yang Dong. Brid Horan and George O’ Driscoll with Chief Executive, Pat O’Doherty. to be of great interest as a tool to help you to change and relax. numerous stands were placed around the conference area, promoting Sustainability, Fair-trade and Wellbeing. Presenters Fiona Kennedy and James Matthews from Generation Operations updated on the 4You programme and roy coulter from niE spoke about ‘Why Safety Matters’ to their business. roger Mcdermott advised the audience on the Heating and Service repair System that Electric ireland provides and Keith Farrell from BSc gave an update on Small contractor Safety Management. richard King from ESB networks provided a case study on Meter readers, outlining some of the main hazards they may encounter while performing this type of work. Grainne coogan from the Safe driving Bureau spoke about the recently launched drivers’ Handbook and the current road Safety Programme with a target for zero fatalities. Sustainability was presented by liam ring, Maurice O’connor and carolyn Heagney, who noted that ESB was an exemplar company in relation to sustainability and the part everyone can play in contributing to this success. an invigorating part of the conference was provided by Paul Hession, Olympic athlete and current irish 200m record holder. Paul took valuable time out from his hectic athletic training schedule to give us an insight into what inspires him to keep active and motivated. We all joined in wishing Paul the best for london 2012. the attendees joined in an interactive session on risk assessment by Jim Murphy using the ‘Jenga’ model of play. in her closing remarks, Brid Horan said the day was an excellent event and that it provided a valuable platform in which to drive forward the work on Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability. n SPORTSCO Manager, Lorna Brady with SPORTSCO Staff Kasia and Rebecca and David Gillick, Team Ireland. tO MarK tHE 150 days to london 2012 which took place on February 28th last, Electric ireland, proud sponsor of team ireland, also launched the “Get Energised challenge” with athletes, david Gillick, Fionnuala Britton and Michael conlan. launching the initiative, london Olympic hopeful, david Gillick said, “it’s hard to believe that the Olympics are so close. it’s good to take time to reflect on the fact that the biggest sporting event in the world will take place on our doorstep shortly, but of course that does bring its own pressure. For me it’s the pressure of ensuring i’m on team ireland come July 27th. the Electric ireland “Get Energised challenge” is a great way for people across the country to feel the energy of what is essentially a home Olympics and make little changes to get fitter and healthier”. the Electric ireland “Get Energised challenge” is a new initiative for people across ireland to get “energised” through a series of simple tips from team ireland athletes to show how we can all put a little more energy back into our lives. Electric ireland will also run a competition for a few lucky people to win a chance to take part in a special health and fitness training day in april focused on best in class energy tips from nutritionists, sports psychologists and fitness experts. there will also be an opportunity to meet some team ireland athletes. n To check out the tips videos go to http:// www.youtube.com/user/ELECTRICIRELAND. For more information check out www.facebook.com/electricireland or boards.ie Kieran Behan ireland’s latest Olympic team member Electric ireland’s sponsorship support for team ireland enables the Oci to fund high performing athletes such as Kieran Behan. 22 year old Kieran recently received a cheque for €20,000 from Pat Hickey, President of the Olympic council of ireland to help him in his preparations for the london Games. Kieran’s Story told by doctors that he could never walk again after a devastating childhood illness Kieran amazed the medical world by pulling through and then, on his 12th birthday, suffered brain damage in a gymnastics training accident. Undaunted, Kieran has shown enormous faith in himself by winning major sporting honours around the world in recent years, cul- minating in his qualification for team ireland at the london Olympics. Pat Hickey, President Olympic council of ireland, making the cheque presentation, commented, “Kieran has shown fantastic grit, courage and determination to reach his Olympic goal and is a stunning addition to ireland’s challenge for Olympic success in london. He has a winning attitude that will inspire both the irish Olympic team members and the public at large. He will do ireland proud, that’s for sure”. Kieran is the first irish gymnast to qualify for the Olympic Games since 1996. n Olympic Mens’ and Womens’ hockey Qualifiers now go on to take part in london 2012. ireland’s Womens’ Hockey team, also sponsored by Electric ireland, travelled to Belgium to play in the Olympic qualifier event. the team progressed through the league stage with victories over Mexico, France, russia and highly ranked Spain to set up a final with host nation, Belgium. Unfortunately, the strong Belgian team scored three times in a seven minute period of the first half to end irish dreams of an Olympic final’s place. the final score was 4-1 and Belgium now go on to the london Olympics. n in our every day being, how difficult it is to be present mentally, ultimately the potential is for us all to be happy. Sandra ryan from Health Services spoke on the new wellbeing booklet that was recently launched by the group. the day was interspersed with break out sessions of reiki and tai chi which proved Staff Reiki demonstrations at the conference. tHE irEland MEn’S Hockey team, sponsored by Electric ireland, made the Olympic qualifier final match after victories over russia, Ukraine, chile and a hard fought draw with Malaysia. the tournament was hosted in Ucd and drew large crowds. the final match was televised live by rtE and Setanta. ireland fought hard and pushed, sixth in the world, Korea, all the way, losing only to a goal with nine seconds on the clock. the final score was 3-2.
