16 SERVICES AND ELECTRIC IRELAND April/May 2012 www.esb.ie/em Jim Kirwin retires Work life Balance photo Competition 8 Presentation to winners of Work Life Balance Photo Competition A Work-Life Balance Photo Competition was organised by Services & Electric Ireland Equality & Diversity Group. The winners were recently presented with their prizes by Brian Dowd, Chairperson of the Services & Electric Ireland Equality & Diversity Group and Energy Services Manager. Peter Murphy making a presentation to Jim Kirwin at his retirement. JiM ‘WinG cOMMandEr’ Kirwan retired from ESB at the end of February after 33 years service. Jim joined ESB in 1978 and commenced his career in what is now known as ESB international. He worked for many power stations, ESB networks depots and also did a number of stints in Saudi arabia. Jim subsequently joined the Facilities team in PHOS, and with his trademark enthusiasm, introduced computer-aided-design (cad). this meant that all refurbishment plans and designs could be drawn using the cad application, to be subsequently stored, modified and printed as required – a huge step forward at the time. Jim worked on almost all refurbishment jobs, office moves and general layout designs. this included projects in Head Office, Fleet Street and clanwilliam House. Jim was also the holder of a commercial pilot’s licence – since lapsed! – and flew many ‘turboprops’ in his day. Jim remains a keen observer of all matters aeronautical. He has been a member of the chartered institute of architectural technologists (ciat) since 1987, and until last year, ably represented the republic of ireland region on the ciat council. Jim was also President of ciat from 2005 until 2007, an honour indeed to represent all members of ciat worldwide and the first non-UK person to be appointed. He has travelled far and wide representing the institute – Hong Kong and Buckingham Palace to name but a few. Jim’s colleagues gathered in HO to wish him an his family well as he sets off to his retirement pursuits – music and golf to name but two. n Kevin Grace being presented with his award for first place by Brian Dowd, Energy Services Manager. The winning entry from Kevin Grace. Appreciation Michael Keaveney it is with deep regret that we learned of the passing of our colleague Michael Keaveney. Michael was quite a private and unassuming person who spent most of his professional life working within ESB. When speaking with his colleagues and friends the very high esteem in which he was held soon becomes clear. as a manager he had the great gift of getting things done by bringing people with him – usually along a pathway of clear common sense. that gift, and the manner in which it was applied, created a huge bank of loyalty and goodwill both within ESB and in the various external organisations with which he was involved. Michael’s career commenced as a young engineer in charge of a rural Electrification construction crew. this gave him the opportunity not only to observe, but to become part of, what the late Michael Shiel termed as ‘the Quiet revolution’ in his book of that name. initially Michael worked in ESB Sligo district and later transferred to Waterford. He spent some time as Group Engineer in Waterford city before transferring to rural development Section in dublin. He worked very closely with the agricultural institute in the areas of dairying, tillage farming and horticulture; and with Government departments on the promotion of both individual and group water supplies. He later took charge of installations division which was a natural source of information for the relatively new Electro-technical council of ireland (the Etci). Michael became an ESB representative to Etci and subsequently became a Board Member of that organization – a position which he retained following his retirement from ESB. Michael loved his family and his hobbies of bridge, fishing and golf. We extend deepest sympathy to his wife ann, daughter rachel and extended family. May his soul rest in peace.
