www.esb.ie/em April/May 2012 SERVICES AND ELECTRIC IRELAND 17 Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil played host to over 5,000 classical musicians in 2012 Pictured above is Colin Rynne, President IHAI, James Davidson, winner of Lifetime Achievement Award with his partner Elsie and Brid Horan, Executive Director Services & Electric Ireland. 2011 iHAi Awards ESB arcHivE & HEritaGE section hosted the seventh annual iHai (industrial Heritage association of ireland) awards in ESB Head Office on tuesday 14th February. iHai chairperson, colin rynne thanked ESB for hosting the event and Services & Electric ireland Executive director, Brid Horan, for ESB’s support and pro-active approach to safeguarding their own heritage, thereby making a very significant contribution to preserving the country’s industrial heritage. colin commended the award winners and the organisations they represented for their outstanding work and achievements. ESB was delighted to support the great work that iHai is engaged in, said Brid. “the work your organisation is carrying out in creating an awareness on an all ireland basis of our rich, shared, and diverse industrial heritage is absolutely essential. the iHai is also trying to engage the help of those in the wider community to support this process which is all the more commendable as it is being done very largely on a voluntary basis, in the spirit of service”. the Best restored Site award went to Mossley Mill, co antrim, a derelict mid-19th century flax spinning mill which has been refurbished as the headquarters of newtownabbey Borough council. the lifetime achievement award was presented to James davidson, who is a bakery historian and belongs to the third generation of his family to be involved in the bakery industry. He researched the bakery business in Ulster for his book Our daily Bread. Well known Ulster bakeries, such as Brewsters, Hughes, irwins, inglis and Ormeau feature in this illustrated history. the book is laid out in themes such as working conditions, machinery, advertising and delivery. the Best Publication award went to donal clarke, author of Brown Gold, a history of Bord na Móna and the irish peat industry, published by Gill & Macmillan in 2010. the recipient of the Best restoration/ replica Model award was Bill Fallover, a film set designer and model maker who was responsible for the superb full-size replica of the Boeing B314 on display at Foynes Flying Boat Museum. n Executive Director Services and Electric Ireland, Brid Horan with Laura Gilsenan, CEO Feis Ceoil at the launch. OvEr HalF a MilliOn classical musicians have competed in Feis ceoil, ireland’s premier classical music competition since its inception in 1896. the 2012 Feis ceoil took place from tuesday March 20th to Friday March 30th in the rdS with the Gala concert taking place in the national concert Hall on Saturday, March 31st. More than 5,000 classical musicians from all over ireland competed during this eleven day festival of classical music. voices, pianos, strings and choirs, took part in over 180 individual classical music competitions. Information on the competitions and schedule are available on www.feisceoil.ie during the Feis, to help audiences choose which performances they would like to see. rounding off this two-week event in grand style, a selection of the most outstanding competitors from the Electric ireland Feis ceoil were showcased at a special Gala concert in the national concert Hall on Saturday March 31. the Gala concert was hosted by Gráinne Seoige, and was attended by the Patron of Feis ceoil association, President of ireland, Michael d Higgins. Feis ceoil cEO laura Gilsenan said, “We were delighted to be launching a brand new look for Electric ireland Feis ceoil this year. Seeking inspiration for our new logo, we were able to draw on imagery used in the early part of the Feis’s history and modernise it to make it sleek and con- temporary. in some ways, this process reflects how the Feis ceoil has stood the test of time. the image of Electric ireland and Feis ceoil combined is a powerful representation of the best of ireland past, present and future”. Brid Horan, Executive director, Services and Electric ireland said, “this is the fourth year of our sponsorship and we are delighted to see the introduction of the stylish new Feis ceoil logo which represents classical music.” n A young musician tuning up at the launch. The Electric Ireland Feis Ceoil School Choir of the Year Award took place on Wednesday, 21st March, 2012 at the Concert Hall in the RDS.
