6 News April/May 2012 www.esb.ie/em North/South postgraduate Scholarships UniVersities ireLAnD, which promotes collaboration between universities in ni and roi, are offering five scholarships to students undertaking a recognised master’s or the first year of a PhD programme (taught or research) in the other irish jurisdiction. these scholarships are worth €15,000 (approx £12,500) each. this year three of the scholarships will be in the areas of energy and engineering and these scholarships will be co-sponsored by esB with Universities ireland. the aim of this scheme is to encourage outstanding students from the roi and ni to cross the border to undertake postgraduate study and experience life in the other irish jurisdiction. it is a scheme that has been conceived both to support the continuing peace process in ni and to train highly skilled postgraduates to contribute to a new phase of economic and environmental development for the island as a whole. the fundamental requirement for eligibility for this scheme is a willingness to relocate to the other irish jurisdiction for a whole year or a major part of a year in order to undertake a master’s or the first year of a PhD programme.n The closing date for applications for this scholarship is Friday, 25th May 2012. Case studies of current and former apprentices, as well as frequently asked questions, helped potential candidates understand the day-today work of nie apprentices and to create a forum for them to interact with the company. Although the deadline for apprentice applications was in early march, the Facebook page will remain live for a number of weeks to help candidates through the next stage of the application process. n For more information visit www.facebook.com/nieapprentices GaLway city counciL PLuGs into EsB Ecars triaL esB eCArs is proud to announce galway City Council as the latest participant in the nationwide electric car trial. galway City Council is one of a number of organisations participating in the national esB ecar trial to support the implementation of esB ecars nationwide charging infrastructure and to gain a greater understanding of eV driver’s behaviour and attitude to electric transport, as well as encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles into company fleets. galway energy Agency Director, Peter Keavney, has been driving an ecar for the past three-months. he commented, “the car is not much different to drive than a normal car of its size but you will definitely notice the difference in lower running costs”. the ecar being trialled by galway City Director Galway energy Agency Peter Keavney, James Lally of esB ecars and Jim Molloy of Galway City Council.
