With the support of esB networks executive Director Jerry o’sullivan and Local Area supervisors, 18 esB volunteers spent three weekends improving the emergency lighting in the ohh premises. the volunteers came from south Lotts road, esBi, Clanwilliam, Limerick and the midlands and were joined by Chief executive Pat o’Doherty. the volunteers installed 82 fittings, internal and external, over the three weekends. the overall programme was completed on time and within the budget provided by esB electricAiD ireland. the original estimate for the work was €42,000, but the work of these committed volunteers brought that down to €8,000. n Fergus Keane and Michelle Clarke at st. Due to the terrific turnout what was to be a two-day operation was completed in one day. the staff at good shepherd services and the pupils were delighted with the result when they arrived on the following monday morning. the volunteers would like to thank every body that turned up but particularly Kay o’Keeffe, eamonn Lyons and ger mcCarthy for their help behind the scenes; Cathal, Ciaran and Padraig, the three apprentices who more than held their own on the day; rory, nigel and stephen the professional painters who were the icing on the cake and reece o’Donoghue and Aisleigh o’Donovan, our two youngest volunteers. n staff and volunteers at the BRUAC eILe Community Training Centre in Cork BrUAC eiLe Community training Centre (CtC) in Cork is a day centre for girls between the ages of 15 - 20 who are unemployed and out of mainstream education. the aim of the centre is to develop a supportive relationship with each girl and to provide each one with the social skills and training necessary to work, continue education or live independently. the good shepherd services approached representatives of electricAiD ireland in late 2011 after they had lost FAs funding for the centre. A suitable building was available but renovation was required as along with school subjects the girls are taught life skills like sewing, cooking and computers. the participants also take part in the Presidents ‘gaisce’ award scheme. the funding was granted the following month and the call went out for volunteers to carry out electrical and painting works. As always the response was excellent and the work was planned for the weekend of 4th/5th February 2012. some volunteer veterans, newcomers, friends and family of staff made up the mix. Unfortunately due to circumstances outside of their control, the volunteer numbers had to fall back by ten. notwithstanding, a large group of thirty six people that turned up on saturday morning which summer Gardening Page 36 http://www.esb.ie/em
