Innovation Crisis Management
simulation exercise
THE CRISIS MANAGEMENT exercise for the Innovation Directorate took place on Wednesday
25th September. For the past seven years, the Crisis Management
Team (CMT) consisted of representatives from ESB International,
but this has been extended to the
wider Innovation Directorate to
incorporate staff from each business area. Twenty staff members
participated in the simulation exercise, which was organised by Daire
Venables, CMT Co-ordinator. Risk
Management International (RMI)
facilitated preparation workshops
for the team in advance of the exercise and assisted the team during
the simulation.
The principle aim of the exercise
was to practise, in a real-life setting, the Crisis Management Action Plan that has been developed
by the Innovation Directorate and
to identify any gaps in the plans
and procedures. The simulation exercise focused on a potentially reallife scenario.
Once the simulation had begun,
Ollie Brogan, Managing Director
RMI has since reviewed the
simulation exercise and has
provided
ESB
Innovation
with an action plan with areas
for improvement. The main
recommendations include:
* Improvements to Stakeholder
Management
* Further developments of the
Crisis Communications Plan
* Enhancement of the Crisis
Scenario Checklists
* Improved Monitoring of Social
Media Channels.
ESB International, addressed the
team to discuss the next steps. Team
members dealt and communicated
with staff on the ground in the particular country, next of kin, staff in
Ireland, media, government bodies
and a number of other stakeholders.
During the exercise, obstacles such
as loss of communications had to be
dealt with. Live media reports on TV,
print and online were provided by
RMI on the day.
Ollie Brogan said: "This was an
excellent learning exercise for all

parties involved. The Crisis Management Team has been in place in
ESB International for the last seven
years and the addition of the new
members has brought extra skills
and experience to the team. It is
important to run these simulation
exercises to ensure that we are as
prepared as possible in the event
of an actual crisis and continue to
learn from our experience".
Over the years, Crisis Management Exercises have provided the
team with valuable learning experiences making it clear that there is
no substitute for practice. n

High flier Claire
Looney shortlisted
for Chartered
Engineer of the Year
Award
Claire Looney, Electrical Engineer, ESB International
was amongst the finalists for the prestigious
Chartered Engineer of the Year Award 2013 presented
by Engineers Ireland.
ESB INTERNATIONAL
ESB INTERNATIONAL IS delighted to congratulate Claire Looney
on being shortlisted for the prestigious 'Chartered Engineer of the
Year' Award 2013 based on her
contribution to the 'Moyle Interconnector HVDC Cable Repair'
project. The 2013 engineering excellence awards took place on Friday November 8th in the Four Seasons Hotel, Ballsbridge, showcasing
the best in Irish engineering.
The 2013 Chartered Engineer of
the Year Award showcased the top
six engineers who were achieved
Chartered Engineer status during
the year. Claire, who is Client
Engineer with ESB International's
EirGrid team, was interviewed by
an expert panel and then presented
her project to a non-technical
audience. The calibre of finalists in
this year's category ensured that
the judges had a tough decision on
their hands and unfortunately, in
the end Claire narrowly missed out
on the top prize.
Claire graduated from University
College Cork in 2004 with an honours degree in Electrical Engineering and joined ESB International as
a graduate engineer. Claire's huge
achievement follows on from the
remarkable success ESB International has previously had with the
Chartered Engineer of the Year
Award. n
